Chances of another ectopic ? 😬

Am i right in thinking once you have a tube removed & other one is clear you’re chances of getting another ectopic are lower ? Praying that I don’t have another ectopic ...

The risk is still there unless there was a specific reason for your first ectopic. When they removed my left tube the surgeon said my right tube at the time looked clear and healthy and it was confirmed to be clear by a HSG. I still went on to lose that tube 18 months later from another ectopic (this time from an IVF transfer so it was clear the tube didn't work)

My doctor said the only way of knowing if a tube works is to get pregnant with a baby in the right location. No test exists which can actually say whether a tube is able to move an egg through it to the uterus

@ivfgottostaypositive
Thankyou ! They did check the other tube when I was having the op . But I guess I will have to just wait & see . Hopefully not ...

Ho @Lifesforloving1, I've been wondering this myself. I'm 4weeks post surgery to remove my right tube. From what I've read there is a 1 in 10 chance of it happening again. I'm not sure how recent yours is but I've found some really useless literature on the miscarriage association site, its definitely helped me process my thoughts around what has happened (big shock, didn't even know I was pregnant)

@Lifesforloving1 good luck for this cycle!

Can I ask, are you scared of it happening again? I think because mine was unknown until I was rushed to hospital I'm still in the stage of processing the trauma & am scared of it happening again, and being worse.

@Dancingfairydreams
Am so worried about it happening again !! I cannot tell you how much I’ve been worrying about it , but ... I know if I want a baby I will have to take that risk. Like you my ectopic was unknown to me too . I took the Clomid to fall pregnant & then 6 weeks down the line I was rushed into hospital with a burst right tube . So sorry you went though that also , it’s awful isn’t it. We are in the same boat . I’ll keep in touch . Xx

@Dancingfairydreams

I wasn't too scared about it happening again as I was lulled into a false sense of security about the health of what was at the time my remaining tube. Also the 10% chance of it happening again encouraged me. But having had a second ectopic and tube loss via IVF I think I was entirely a bit too naive

I did feel a huge amount of guilt about what I put DD through though and did wonder if TTC again was worth it if I left her motherless - she was 2 the first time and I remember her screaming "mummy" as they ran down the hospital corridors with me into surgery.

That being said lots of people in the ectopic support groups I'm in did go on to have successful pregnancies I'm just an extreme case unfortunately

Hi both, apologies for only just replying, thank you both for sharing your thoughts & experiences, I really appreciate it. It's such a strange time for me.

@Lifesforloving1 how was this cycle for you? 🤞 I feel the same as you, the desire to be a mum in my heart is worth the risk, but I am still that bit apprehensive!

@ivfgottostaypositive I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you twice. You've been very unlucky. I agree with you around the sense of naivety, I think there is generally a lot of naivety around ttc as a whole, but there doesn't seem to be much awareness of ectopic pregnancy around (at least in my experience).

Take care both
