IVF second tracking scan

stephcumbria · 02/06/2020 17:00

We've just had our second tracking scan and I only had 6 follicles that were growing. I'm not sure what I had at baseline scan or what my amh is.
I have been on 150 meriofert and 150 gonal f.
Clinic have now upped it to 225 gonal f and 150 meriofert plus the addition of 150 cetrodide.

Has anyone had experience of more follicles growing between this point (day 5/6) of IVF and egg collection?

Feeling pretty worried that it's not going to work out.
We've had 4 miscarriages in 18 months and I have high nk cells hence the need to try and control it with IVF.

Any experiences would be helpful x

Hi how many days have you been taking stims and what cycle day did you start?

Are there only 6 in total or just 6 larger ones? Some Clinics don't count anything smaller than a certain size whereas some clinics count everything that's visible

I would say If you've got 5 of a similar size and you've been injecting for 5/6 days then I don't think anything else will join the race at this point

One thing I would say is don't get hung up on numbers. I had 28 eggs collected from 2 cycles last year and due to poor egg quality less than 30% fertilised with ICSI and ended up with 4 average quality blastocysts

I've now reduced to natural Modified IVF so hardly any drugs and so far from 2 cycles I've got 9 eggs 100% fertilised and 4 top quality blastocysts so actually for a lot of people fewer = better quality

You'll read loads of stories where someone got 20+ eggs but it's not that coming unless they were in their 20s to get more than a couple of blastocysts at the end of it

Sorry for your losses Steph, I wouldn't expect any more to 'appear' so would say you're looking at 6 eggs maximum, it depends on their size when you do the trigger shot.
You can't know at this stage if it's going to work out, I know people who got 2 "eggs and had a baby and people who got 20 eggs and didn't.
You also can't control it at this point so don't get yourself more stressed than you already are.

Thank you for your responses.
I started on cycle day 2 and I have been stimming for 5 days (prior to scan) now 6 days including tonight.
There was 1 large follicle and the rest were smaller at different sizes.

I'm 37 this year so I know not to expect the world with IVF. I was just shocked the numbers were so low.

Fingers crossed that we get something good from it.

@ivfgottostaypositive good luck with your cycle

Fingers crossed for you.

Do you know what your antral follicle count was last time they checked?
It can give an indication of how many follicles you have and an idea of how many eggs you might get, but it can also vary from one cycle to the next (mine can vary quite a bit so my current plan is not to start stims unless my baseline scan shows a certain number.

It is probably worth asking for your own knowledge what your baseline scan showed and what they expected, i.e. if there were lots of follicles that haven't responded as hoped, or if there were around 6.
Also are the smaller ones of a size that they might catch up or are they lots smaller?

Are you NHS or private?
My first IVF attempt my response to stims was poor and the cycle was cancelled.
It was really horrible at the time but I did go on to have egg collection on my next cycle.

Hi,

We are private as we went through this clinic to do recurrent miscarriage investigations as the nhs messed the tests up and we lost faith in them.

I'm not sure the clinic did an amh test for me which I'm wondering how they came up with my protocol if they did?

I haven't asked about my antrical follicle count but will do to see what was expected. If they were expecting so few follicles to grow I would have hoped they would tell me.

We had another scan today and I have 2 follicles 18-22mm so they are collecting on Monday. The others were too small and won't catch up.

So much to take in on your first IVF cycle but this was our only chance with this clinic that we could afford.

We have a lot of hoops to jump through now with only 2 potential follicles and eggs so we have everything crossed.

Hoping egg collection went as well as it could and that you get good news tomorrow from the clinic.
Depending on how things go I'd want to find out why they think the response was not as hoped, but fingers crossed you are still in with a chance.

stephcumbria · 08/06/2020 16:40

Thank you. It didn't go well. My 2 follicles were empty. So no eggs.
They are re doing an Amh rest as when I had it done last year apparently it was normal. (Not sure what the actual result was)

Consultant thinks IVF is not for us going forward as he believes it is low ovarian reserve. Will know more on Wednesday.

He has suggested a donor egg cycle. So will read more about that.

Thank you for your comments. Hope you are all well.
It's a tough business this!! X

Sorry to hear that 💐
Good luck on Wednesday and don't be afraid to ask questions.
My first cycle was cancelled and they said they didn't think I'd get any eggs in the future but I have gone on to have egg collection afterwards (I'm a bit older than you) but not yet got pregnant.
There is a Donor Conception board here too if you want to have a look but for now there is a lot to take in and the upset at how today went so be kind to yourself.
It may be that you do need donor eggs but I don't know if they can conclusively say that after 1 attempt. At the very least get your treatment and consultation notes and another opinion (although clinics are all businesses out to make money, so be wary of too good to be true promises).
Your antral follicle count and AMH are part of the picture but there will be more useful information.
