Ttc after an ectopic...

I had my right tube removed at the start of April after an ectopic pregnancy...
Am hoping my period will show up this month (fingers crossed ) and I will start Clomid again.. what’s the chances of it happening again ? I’m so worried it will be another ectopic ....

Unfortunately odds are higher - and they double each time. I lost both tubes within 18 months of each other due to ectopics (1 was following an IVF transfer)

Have you been given go ahead to try again as usually the advice is to wait at least 3 months......

That’s pretty crappy isn’t it ! Have you had a baby with success now ? The doctor said I’d be able to try again after my first period comes back (am hoping it comes this month ) I got pregnant with Clomid . ( first time pregnant & I get an ectopic )

Unfortunately not - we moved on to IVF after a year of trying with one tube thinking that it would reduce the risk of another but unfortunately it didn't (I know now IVF actually increases the chances) - I'm waiting to start a final round of IVF and then will transfer whatever we get

There aren't many doctors that are knowledgeable about ectopics unfortunately - the advice from the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust is to wait 3 months to make sure everything is healed but it depends on if you are comfortable that the scars are healed etc and you may find ovulation is really painful on the side the ectopic was removed until the scar tissue in that area settles now

I would also ask for a copy of your surgeons notes - a lot of the time when they remove the ectopic they leave a really long stump behind and this can still result in an ectopic

Also perhaps request a HSG test to check if your other tube is blocked or not x

Hi I also had an ectopic after first fresh IVF transfer but was treated with drugs not surgery. Unfortunately like @ivfgottostaypositive says, the risks are increased once you’ve had an ectopic once before and other factors such as previous history of pelvic inflammatory disease, previous abdominal surgery etc (basically anything that could cause scarring in your pelvis) increases the risk. Conversely IVF also increases the risk even though you wouldn’t logically expect that when they know they have placed the embryo in uterus (unfortunately they move...).

BUT it is definitely possible to have a normal pregnancy after an ectopic. We had a frozen transfer 5 months after the ectopic and it was successful. Was told to wait for minimum 3 months after surgery or 3 months after last dose of methotrexate. I personally felt better for waiting longer before trying again but the decision as to when to start TTC is ultimately up to you and your doctor. Good luck 🍀

Thankyou both for you’re replies ! I think I may wait at least 3 months then ... even though I was told I could start again straight away ( confusing advice for a doctor to give ) I’m hoping i won’t have another ectopic if I get lucky again . Do you think the Clomid could of caused it ?! People don’t realise how easy that have it sometimes ... my dr said if I was to have ivf I would only get one round on the nhs . He said to try Clomid first though as I have pcos and did not ovulate . Good luck to you both 💕
