Thyroid TSH 2.8 - any experiences?

Hi

I've recently had a TSH result of 2.8 which my gp says is fine. I've read a few sites which mention it needing to be lower.

Has anyone conceived with this result or heard from a professional that or should be lower?

Clutching at straws a bit here!

Thanks

Some good info on thyroid uk. 'Optimal' for fertility tends to be under 2.5 (and ideally close to 1). What were your t3 and t4 looking like?

But obviously everyone is different.

Have you got a sympathetic gp who would be willing to try a small dose of thyroxine? Obviously, it's a lot cheaper than ivf!! I'm of the opinion it might be worth a try... but I'm not a medic.

My tsh was always round a similar figure. Had two chemicals in the first year of ttc and then nothing for a year and a half. Tested it again and it had gone up to 4 (with my t4 below normal range and t3 on the low end of normal) so they were willing to try medication just before my ivf cycle (which worked). I am sure the thyroxine is why my pregnancy was successful...

I've been having fertility investigations for the past year or so and my consultant wasn't happy with my level as it was (around 5) so she put me on thyroxine. When I made a GP appointment to get the prescription she was very reluctant to give it to me, saying I was only borderline hypo! I had to sternly remind her that it was the opinion of my fertility consultant that my level needed to be below 2 to conceive, and said I wasn't leaving without the prescription. After a couple of months, my level had reduced to below 1. Still not pregnant, but I do feel much better on the medication (and there are other factors for me, like a blocked tube).

If you've been trying for a while, I would ask to be referred to a fertility specialist.

Mine was 2.8 (which is fine for day to day life) but my fertility consultant wanted it under 2.5 for TTC - I was put on low dose thyroxine and it was below 1 within a matter of weeks

Mine fluctuates, it was 2.3 when I started fertility tests. It was 1.9 in November but 3.06 in December. My recurrent miscarriage consultant said anything over 2.8 I could ask to be medicated. I was prescribed levothyroxine and I concieved that cycle but had a chemical pregnancy.

My GP didn't want to issue the prescription as my thyroid was 'normal' but he reluctantly agreed to do it.

My rmc consultant wants me to stay on the lowest dose until I'm pregnant now.

Definitely worth looking into x

Hello!

Please look into this alongside other fertility investigations and be prepared to fight if needed. Has everything else come back clear?

My story: unexplained infertility, 3 x failed clomids, 3 failed iuis and 1 failed ivf. (Also 1/2 natural cps). I looked into thyroid, saw my level was 3 and thought the same as you. I asked my IVF consultant and she was unconvinced and said to see your gp. My gp was also unconvinced but he contacted the endocrinologist who said I could go on thyroxine. Meanwhile I was already prepping for my FET and had the transfer a few weeks later which resulted in pregnancy. All okay so far! Not sure if it was 'luck' the 2nd ivf worked or the thyroxine. Had I have got pregnant that month naturally because of the thyroxine I will never know as I was downregging for IVF. Good luck!

Have a look at the conception board, there are loads of threads on 'optimal thyroid levels' etc.. I'm on a thread called '4th chemical...'

My TSH was 4. After 3CPs and they being prescribed thyroxine, I conceived within a month of it stabilising my levels. Age 40 with a low ovarian reserve. I think it was definitely the thyroid.

Thanks everyone. We've done all of the fertility tests and everything's fine apart from me being in my early 40s! In myself though I just feel like I could do with a little 'tweak' if you know what I mean - like something is off just a little.

Here are my ft3 and ft4 results @physicskate . I've hopefully included them as pictures so you can see the reference ranges.

Mine was 3.5 and gynae put me on thyroxine. I had heard that around 2 was better, so yours doesn't sound that high but perhaps a bit over.
