Sperm Count. Went from okay to zero.

Does anyone have any knowledge on Male Infertility? My husbands had his sperm analysis back and they only found one sperm! This was a complete shock as we conceived very quickly before (4 years), meaning his count has reduced dramatically. Does anyone have any information or knowledge on why this could be? He keeps an okay diet etc. Thanks so much.

Did he have an analysis done before? It could be that it has always been non-existent and you got lucky first time round? Friends of ours got pregnant straight away when ttc. When it ended in miscarriage they tried again for years only to be diagnosed with very low sperm count. So it may not be that it reduced at all or reduced from a low base.

Have your consultants recommended testicular sperm removal? Are you considering ivf?

Hi @peterpettigrew thanks for replying. He had one analysis in December and one in January - both the same. But no, he hasn’t had anymore so I guess we could have been very lucky before! We have been recommended surgical removal, I’m just so scared there won’t be any and then the words ‘sperm donor’ gets thrown around. We are going to go for ICSI yes, I have high AMH and egg count so as long as we get sperm then I’m hoping we have an okay shot. Long road ahead!

Hi @mabel92 I am no medical professional but I think it’s more likely there were issues and you were lucky rather than your DH count went from normal (>20mil) to essentially 0 in 4 years - unless he had some kind of injury or illness that time?

If my friends pregnancy hadn’t ended in miscarriage they also would’ve thought they had no issue. However again this is just anecdotal.

If I were you I would first go and see a good urologist to make sure there are no underlying issues for the sperm count (ie blockage or Varicoele) - I always hear Jonathan Ramsey mentioned here. If you have to pay private anyway I would recommend going to him. He takes male infertility seriously (most clinics just say whatever ICSI is the ‘cure’ and don’t bother trying to find out if there’s a fixable issue) he also is one of the leading guys for surgical sperm removal in the Uk so would probably improve your chances of finding some surgically.

I’m just so scared that they don’t find any sperm, I’m looking for as much info as I can!

We have booked to see a urologist in February and hopefully get some answers! Thanks

I would recommend seeing Mr Ramsey, he is pricey but as far as I know he’s the top male fertility expert in the UK.
