1 year TTC - 1st GP appointment and starting COQ10

Hi everyone,

So, we've reached 1 year TTC. I'm both surprised and not surprised this has happened, if that makes any sense. I always worried it would happen to me, but shocked it actually has.

I'm 26 and DH is 27, so we are still young. My periods are on and off regular then not regular, so it's really annoying me. No clue what DH swimmers are like but we eat really well and do some (not enough) exercise per week.

Any tips for the first GP visit after trying for a year? I really want to push for a referral however long it takes (bless the NHS) and not get fobbed off.

Also, any tips on supplements that helped anyone else? I've just bought CoQ10 120mg from Holland and Barrett. I've been taking folic acid all year already.

Thanks!

@iRawra hello, I was the same as you. Always worried it would happen and then shocked when it did. If you have been trying for a year then your GP will refer you. Make sure you push this because you could wait months for the appointment. In the mean time, you should ask for day 21 blood tests to check if you are ovulating and your DP should have a semen analysis. This is your starting point for investigations. My hospital won’t see you unless semen analysis has been carried out prior to the first appointment.

@Scotgirl1 Thanks for the tips! It's the thing I've most dreamed of since I was young, as well as having a lovely partner. 1 of 2 ticked isn't so bad :)

@iRawra hello,
Hope you mama get to get sorted at the docs! I'm the same age as you and have just started trying in November! This is also my biggest fear too 🙈 I've started taking coq10 folic acid and vital. I read Luisa zissmanns 'maybe baby' blog and she recommended taking 3 x coq10 per day! She also recommends a vital tablet for men as well as women.

Hope this helps! X

@iRawra how did you get on with your first GP appointment 😊? I'm hoping to book mine soon and feeling rather nervous! X

@h19olly @ForeverHopeful67 thanks for your messages. Appointment was only today due to Christmas and New Year. The doctor asked me about my periods, whether I've been pregnant before of if DH had made me/anyone pregnant before (I had a termination in 2014 with a different partner and 2 suspected early miscarriages with DH).

She looked at my cycle tracking and straight away referred me for the following bloods and US. Some I have to do, such as the STI past and current, and some are investigatory. I am also having a smear test.

For reference, I am Leeds city centre.

@iRawra hey! Great need you finally we're able to have your app and so sorry to hear about your MCs.

I'm pleased to hear they're getting the ball rolling for you! I've also got to have my bloods done this week ( has a scan last year which came back clear) so we're around the sam stage! Xx

iRawra · 07/01/2020 22:53

@ForeverHopeful67 I'll be doing bloods tomorrow too! And ultrasound scan letter should arrive within 3-4 weeks the doc said. Got to get hubby to the docs now for sperm analysis.

@iRawra hope bloods went ok today!
When I got my scan letter through last year it came through the week after so hopefully you won't be waiting too long Smile
How weird though as I'm also getting my OH to do his SA through his GP! - not sure exactly how they arrange this but he's due a call with his doctors tomorrow!x

iRawra · 09/01/2020 10:08

@ForeverHopeful67 Aww that is strange! I joined mine near my work for ease and he's at one near home cause he works from home! He JUST joined the other day so hopefully he can make appointment soon. They've delayed my bloods, smear test and swab test to next Wednesday as the practitioner that does it is poorly. Have you had yours?

Good to hear r.e. scan time. Maybe I'll see the letter sooner than I hoped.

We've been trying for a year now, I've just turned 36 and my parter is 45. Neither of us have children. We went to the drs in November last year and I was referred for blood tests and STI screen and my partner a SA. The nurse told me on my last visit for blood that that my first set (day 1 bloods and STI screen were both ok. Haven't heard anything about partners analysis but last week had a letter through to the fertility clinic to say we have an appointment 21st January, the letter was addressed to me but asked that we both attend. Not sure what to expect but it's with a fertility consultant. Haven't had a scan like some of the other posters have had so maybe they will do that? Anyone had their first consultant appointment and knows what it might entail.
Only joined today and nice to to feel so alone

ForeverHopeful67 · 11/01/2020 23:38

@iRawra makes sense! I'd probably see if your partner can do his SA sooner rather than later as my partner requested this with his GP when I needed to have my bloods done, my bloods were done Friday and I should get the results early next week but as there's a few different parts/ steps regarding SA it's going to take a bit longer for them!
Hope all goes well for you Weds

@MariaNov2019 welcome to the thread! Sorry to hear that you're having issues TTC although seems like we're all in a similar position so it would be great to go through this together! Also didn't seem like you had to wait too long to get an app with the fertility clinic which is reassuring! From what I hear regarding first app they will just chat through your history and most likely do a scan there and then!xx

iRawra · 12/01/2020 08:57

@MariaNov2019 I'm sorry you're both having trouble too. That's something I've come to realise too, that it's way more common than I thought and we really aren't alone.

@ForeverHopeful67 thanks for the advice r.e. SA. I keep asking him everyday to book his appointment and he keeps forgetting. Gonna get him to book it tomorrow. My bloods, pap smear and STI swab are on Wednesday and I've got my ultrasound letter though. That's on 3rd Feb :)

@iRawra yay great news that you've got your ultrasound scan through! You're definitely making progress now Smile my OH also kept forgetting to call ( sometimes I wonder whether this was on purpose as he was a bit anxious about it all! 😂) but yeh do keep going on as once that's done all your ducks will be in a row then and nothing will be holding you back Smile let me know how you get on on weds!xx
