Transfer one or two for FET

I know this question has been done to death but am still in a dilemma. We have 7 frosties and will be trying soon for a sibling. Have always transferred 2 before and have had one DC with first FET. Whilst am nervous about the risks of a twins pregnancy (if we are lucky enough to get pregnant at all), am mindful that transferring 2 does increase chances of success a little, even if that is nowhere near double. Also due to age/ financial reasons and the emotional toll, I don’t think I’d be able to cope with more than 2/3 attempts at transfer. I know it will ultimately come down to personal choice but would be helpful to hear what others have done and their reasoning for it. Have faced this decision before with each attempt at transfer and it never gets easier!

@Lemongrass1 Hi, i am going through this question in my head for last few days.. had consultation before starting FET2 (FET#1 failed with one embryo transfer)...My doctor has recommended again for 1 transfer only but i really want to consider 2 with a hope that at least 1 might survive.. but my clinic said that two is considered in complicated only with multiple bfn and twin pregnancy can be risky.. i dont quite get the reasoning provided ... will follow this thread in hope to get some clarity

I pushed for two on my second transfer and ended up with an ectopic (had history of ectopic anyway but in hindsight transferring more than 1 increased the risk even more)

My clinic will only transfer 2 if they are very similar quality as there have been studies that the body will put all its efforts into a weaker embryo and you could end up losing both a good one and a poorer one

That being said I want to complete my family in one go - I've already done 3 transfers - if I have 2 available on my next cycle I'm going to demand 2 are transferred (I don't have any tubes left now anyway so risk of ectopic is zero)

I had 3 at 2nd go. Was think 39

Doc said do you want a baby so chance of no baby or triplets. We both said triplets. Tho all failed and in hindsight obv don’t want triplets

The next 2 we did singles and failed so 4 attempts and 6 possibles

We did dither on 5th. Clinic said my choice. I was then 42

But decided age and didn’t want risk of twins and we still had a few embryos so went for one

And that was the one that stuck - dd is now heading up to 3. I’m 46.5

If you really don’t want risk of twins then chose one to transfer

How old are you? I would opt for 1.. Unless you had failed transfers in a cycle before the one that worked?

Thanks to all for the responses so far. @AliceAbsolum I was 38 when frosties were frozen and 41 for next transfer. We had 2 transfers (one fresh and one frozen) before we had success, with 2 embryos transferred each time. First transfer resulted in a pregnancy of unknown location.

Oh I see. Well if I was you I would have 2. But like you said it's such a personal decision.

Interested in post..

Im in a simular situaton only i dont have a problem in getting a BFP as such, but ive had 4 pregnancies and 4 losses (i had DS in 3rd pregnancy, he was a twin so still class as a loss)
Im having FET in the new year and have 3 top quality frosties.
I do NOT want twins... at all...
But i do not want another miscarriage so figured if i put 2 back, i may have more chance of achieving a successful pregnancy. (Mimicking my 3rd if you like)

I always thought that I would like to have twins till I read about the high miscarriage rate. Then I decided I'd rather have one living child than another miscarriage so opted for one.

I had a total of 5 embryos transferred over 3 cycles - I have one child now

Which embryo stuck for you and how old were you, @GrandmaSharksDentures?

I'm about to do my 4th transfer (embryos 6&7), have recently been diagnosed with endo, haven't ever seen a BFP and looking for hope that it could still work! 💕

I’m doing FET in Jan. We had IVF four years ago, with two embryos put back. Only one stuck. Will be putting two frozen back again in the new year. The thought of twins scares the shit out of me, but if it happened, we’d cope and I think ultimately, be grateful.

No FET here (yet - considering it!) but we had two embryos put back after our first round of IVF. DTs are now just over 4 Grin

I know 4 other sets of twins around the same age - 2 IVF, 2 natural.

We only intended to have one transferred but when we arrived on the day, the clinic explained that they unexpectedly had another one ready and what would we like to do?! We had ten minutes to make a drastic decision and decided to go for it, I was 37 at the time and we thought it might be our only pregnancy. I won't lie, it was a tough pregnancy although ultimately fine - C section at 37 weeks, both babies a good weight - and I don't think I'd have considered it if I hadn't had (private) fertility testing previously where I was told that my womb looked very healthy.

The clinic did also tell me to consider that even a transfer of a single embryo can result in twins - gets more common the older you are - I'm not sure I could have coped with triplets Confused
