Thyroid and ivf

Hi everyone,

Anyone here had high thyroid levels?

If so what did you take to settle it and also if you did ivf? Is there a link with ivf failure with thyroid levels?

Yes, absolutely there is a link with infertility and miscarriage and thyroid issues.

What's your tsh?

Many moons ago the Lister tested the thyroid of every woman who walked through the ivf clinic door. Although there are still lots of Dr's who don't know that normal tsh isn't good enough for pregnancy. It needs to be 2 or below from memory.

SolAlii · 04/09/2019 23:24

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I am with Lister too.
Is level is 5.2 I think

There's no way to remedy tsh without taking thyroxine, which is prescription only.

Legoroses · 05/09/2019 16:05

So presumably the consultant is prescribing you thyroxine? And then waiting until it's below 2 before starting ivf?

SolAlii · 05/09/2019 22:10

Hi,

Yes I'm on Thyroxine for another month. Then they'll check levels and hopefully then I can do ivf. I've never had my thyroid levels checked and have had 4 ivf cycles and all failed.

So I'm glad that finally they've done a thyroid check and I'm now on meds. Hopefully the next cycle is successful.
I love children and work with children and cannot wait to hold my own child.

Please pray it works.

Hi! I've been ttc for over a year and in my blood tests it flagged up that I have an over active thyroid. TSH levels were 0.03 I'm on medication to try and bring levels down from the consultant and she thinks this is the reason why we haven't managed to conceive. So yes plays a massive part, TSH is undermined in my opinion with fertility.

SolAlii · 06/09/2019 08:16

Here are my results! It's actually 5.17

So very high I guess

Thyroid and ivf

It's not crazy high for 'normal life', but is certainly in the realm of possible subclinical hypothyroidism and should be addressed regardless of ttc or not.

physicskate · 06/09/2019 08:32

I've also just noticed your ft4. Ideally, it should be on the higher end of the normal range, so more like 18+. That's perhaps a more important indicator.

SolAlii · 06/09/2019 16:20

Thank you for your reply. On meds now hopefully it's normal in a month.

Did you have your antibodies checked too, thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin? These cross the placenta and can cause congenital defects (and also increase risk of miscarriage, implantation failure etc). You'll need to take steroids during ivf to deal with this.

79andnotout · 06/09/2019 18:36

Also I can't believe you've had so many rounds without your thyroid being checked. That's really bad!

SolAlii · 06/09/2019 19:14

Hi,

Thank you, I know I can't believe I've spent so much money and my previous clinic did not do a test for thyroid.

Thai is my 1st cycle with Lister though...fingers crossed all goes well

Mrs71, are you doing ivf?

OP posts:
Mrs71 · 06/09/2019 21:02

Hello, no sorry I didn't see the ivf bit I read the thyroid bit. I am getting referred in November to the fertility clinic. I've been ttc for a while now and just found out I have an over active thyroid. The consultant told me it would be difficult to fall pregnant naturally at the moment with my levels. Also risk of miscarriage is really high for me.

Mrs71 · 06/09/2019 21:03

I am looking into ivf privately at the moment but I feel so nervous.

SolAlii · 06/09/2019 21:11

It's like a luck pot. No harm in trying. I hope all goes well and you become a mum soon. Lots of hugs and kisses ur way

Hi I was in a similar situation and been on thyroxine for a few months. (Lister too) The initial dose was too low and my TSH actually went up so the dose was increased and immediately dropped to a good level. You will need to get the level right before starting meds as they interfere with testing so can’t be monitored properly after. I would have another test in a fortnight and check from there. The impact should be relatively quick so if you are in a rush you can still test and fix

Mrs71 · 06/09/2019 21:44

@SolAlii aww thank you so much. I really hope it happens for you too. I hope you get your BFP soon!

SolAlii · 06/09/2019 21:48

@Jojo19834 thank you for the reply, yes I'm on meds now so will do my transfer after my levels are checked. Really hope my next cycle works.

I love children and work with children but so badly want to hold my own child.

@Mrs71 thank you Hun....really hope it works for us.
