HSG

I will hopefully be having my HSG during my next cycle. The HSG needs to be completed between cd5-10 and I normally ovulate on cd14/15. It categorically says in the letter that I should use contraceptives or abstain for that month due to the radiation risk. Would you put off ttc this cycle just in case or just keep trying?

I'm also really apprehensive about having the HSG but I know its an important step in the process of infertility.

I would be guided by the professionals.

Hey, don’t worry about the HSG. It really isn’t that bad.

The centre I was treated at, didn’t stipulate any guidance about trying that month. We were told not have have unprotected sex leading up to the procedure in case I’d ovulated early and conceived (little chance of that for me 🙄) as the HSG would likely flush out any embryo.

I am medical, but not a radiologist. The radiation dose from a HSG is very low. Your follicles are all present and developing for subsequent cycles, so saying abstain for 1 cycle isn’t really logical to me

I had the hsg in June. I was asked at least 3 times if I had abstained from sex (not just had protected sex). They wouldn't have performed the procedure if I had. I believe part of the danger is also risk of ectopic due to the dye being pushed up the tubes. My cycle was a couple of days shorter after the hsg and I had a very light period.

It was really painful for me, paracetamol and ibuprofen didn't help at all and they actually stopped because it was so bad. But everyone has a different experience, hopefully yours will be OK.

But, 2 cycles later I am now 5+5 weeks pregnant. Might be a coincidence but I'd been ttc for 18+ months before, with a mmc in April.

Good luck.
