IVF document requirements

hello everyone, it's my first time here in mumsnet and I'm hoping someone can help me understand why we were asked to provide a bank statement along with a proof of salary going into our account for IVF document / requirements?

We were recently told by our doctor that we will definitely need IVF due to the results of our tests and therefore recommended us to NHS assisted conception clinic. They required several items, i.e. passport, proof of address, government letter, etc. which we have submitted apart from our bank statement.

Will we not qualify if we are currently employed? We work part-time / freelancers and there are months that we earn (seemingly a lot but it's a culmination of number of months worked) and some months with no projects at all. I'm afraid we will be disqualified as our recent statement may appear we have too much. I'm also afraid that our personal data will not be handled securely.

Is this requirement normal? I shall appreciate if someone can share their thoughts / experience on this.

I had IVF privately and we only had to provide photo ID (passport) and proof of address when first registered. We certainly did NOT have to provide banking details or proof of earnings!!!

Are you having private or IVF treatment? Are you in England or elsewhere? I presume Wales may have the same rules as England, but not sure for Scotland or Northern Ireland.

I am private on my second cycle. They needed ID for us both and just had our passports. The clinic did not ask for any other ID or proof of funds/wages.

My friend is about to start a cycle on the NHS. They asked for passports and she had to fill in the funding criteria forms (i.e. they sign to say they do not have other children, have been together for over 2 years etc) but have never had to give any bank statement or proof of wages either.

IVF is not means tested on the NHS at present.

If you want to share where you live in terms of which country and which clinic and hopefully someone may have had the same clinic to be able to tell you. It is not usual from what I have seen and I have never heard anyone mention having to show bank statements and proof of earnings before.

I'm pretty sure that isn't right about being employed? I'm on loads of fertility support groups and no one has ever mentioned not qualifying if you work otherwise there wouldn't be such a massive demand for ivf? I was due to have NHS ivf a couple of years ago and bank statements were never requested?
Were you born in the Uk? Maybe if you were born abroad there are different rules?

Hi everyone - firstly, thank you so much to you all for responding to my questions and providing feedback, much appreciated!

We're doing IVF via the NHS (and hopefully we won't go private if all goes well). The conception unit is in Kingston Upon Thames.

We're really unsure why there is a need to show proof of funds. One of our issues in doing this will be, of course, our bank details being out in the open (and we do not know how secure our details will be . But the main thing is, we do not want to be disqualified based on what they make out of our accounts. We have had our tests and revealed we cannot really conceive naturally.

We've been married for 8 years now and trying in the last 5 years - I didn't realise this is such an emotional journey - my husband's really calm and supportive about this, and it saddens me that we're going through this (apologies for sharing sadness ) But, thank you all for responding. Based on what we gathered online, they said this is normal for Kingston Hospital to require, and nothing to do with our current financial situation (but we are still concerned nonetheless, you never know).

For NHS it’s for proof of eligibility for payment services — there has been a rise in maternity and IVF fraud from people who are actually residents of another country. For example I know a bunch of people who live in India (and have done for years) and only come down here when they get pregnant or need medical treatment. With these checks they can’t do that any more.

If you go privately they don’t care where you are resident as it all costs the same.

Are sure the back statement is not just due proof of address?

We had to submit passports (to ensure we are entitled to ANY NHS treatment ie UK citizen and here legally) and passport photos - these were used to create an ID card which made sure when the treatment started we were who we said were avoiding any embryo mix ups.

We are high earners; we qualified for treatment on nhs as my husband had mumps affecting his sperm, were under the right age and BMI and had no children.

It’s not means tested.

Thanks Teddybear45 - oh dear, I'm suddenly sad for NHS based on that story, but I guess it is still happening.

Do they scan or photocopy your passport?

They will photocopy it for you. But to be sure, I also brought my own copies, if in case their copying machine was not working properly.
