IVF at 41

Has anyone got any advice? DP doesn’t want to go abroad and I can’t get it on the NHS so if we do it we go private. I’m in the south east. I conceived fairly easily twice (although the first was ectopic so now I have only one tube). DS is 4 now and we’ve been trying almost three years. I’d given up on the whole thing but DP got a bonus so he suggested we put it towards IVF. But I’m not sure.

Abroad is cheaper even with flights

And imo technology far better then uk

I’m in south east and did two private cycles at my Local clinic aged 40 and 41

Both failed and none left to freeze

Abroad at 42 give me a higher dose of drugs and icsi and think had 7 get to day 5:6 and 6 frozen

Just something to think about

Check stats of live births over 40 for the clinic

If you’re not sure I’d say don’t. It’s you who had to go thru all the treatment after all, and odds are not good.

I’d go through the treatment, it was the financial cost that concerned me, for something that is fairly likely to fail, given my age. Have you heard anything about Create fertility?

If the only thing stopping you previously was the money and you are both willing to give it a go then I'd suggest you look for any open evenings at clinics and see what you think.

Before IVF I wonder if it's worth getting some basic fertility checks done (although if you pay for a consultation at a clinic I'd expect these to be included). Just in case something like Clomid could help, might be worth a try.

I've had treatment in the UK and for next IVF cycle will go to Spain.
It's actually working out around the same price for treatment (the current exchange rate doesn't help) and then we'll have flights and accommodation as well but I trust the clinic and they seemed more advanced than the UK clinics I'd experienced.
That said you could get IVF cheaper in e.g. the Czech Republic, or as you're in the southeast lots of choice in London.

I'm with Create but I'm mid thirties and I really like them

You should be realistic though about chances - over 41/42 the chance of ivf working is only 1% and I'm not sure I would go with those odds as even with Create the costs will be about £6-7k

Whilst i know that it’s a long shot with age I don’t think the percentage of 1% is quite right. I am 41 and been told by my clinic that it’s 10%, which I know is still a long shot, but odds that I reckon is still worth giving a go. We have had an unsuccessful cycle on the nhs, but looking at funding a private cycle and seeing if there is anything that we can do differently. Guess it’s personal choice.

@2019isouryear there was a news report a couple of weeks ago that the HFEAA has found many clinics not being completely truthful with women about the success rates for older women - the figures they gave were that only 75 women out of 2265 had a baby over the age of 43 which is like 3% and then falling to 1% at age 44+ (using own eggs). I don't want to be such a downer but I think it's important to be realistic going into this and that no matter how nice the clinic and doctors are at the end of the day they're running a business and so will always say they're is a Chance even if the odds are massively stacked against us x

@itwasalovelydreamwhilstitlasted I remember the news story, but I’m not going to lie I did not listen too much as I was going through my own cycle so was trying to stay positive, although I was aware of the greater chance that it may fail, but u gotta have hope, as why would we do it otherwise. I was just referring to the current % for the OPs age which at 41 the HFEA put as 9% for women aged between 40-42. I’m in that bracket and I know that the odds are more against than for me, but I guess I feel that it’s worth a chance based on the odds. As u say this is a very difficult process more so than I ever thought it would be. x

I’ve had my basic fertility tests done, and DP had his test too. My doctor said she wouldn’t prescribe clomid.
