Does weight play a part in miscarriage

Hi everyone. I have had four miscarriages and am 39. Been passed from pillar to post with regards to tests and help etc. Been told just to keep trying and that ivf would not help. We are considering private treatment now. Does any have experiences of good clinics in London? And also do people think weight has an impact.

Hi there are a lot of studies which show that weight has a major part to play in fertility healthy - NHS has a maximum bmi they will treat at and private clinics also do (although it's a bit higher than the NHS) - especially if you are classed as morbidly obese?

I would say If you are preparing to spend thousands on ivf you need to be in the best possible health for it to work and that includes weight?

(That being said I'm not overweight and just going through my 4th miscarriage so weight isn't everything)

Sorry you’re going through this. Age (yours and perhaps also your DP’s) could be the main factor. You could seek a referral to an NHS mc clinic.

Recommend Prof Lesley Regan’s book on miscarriage. Can’t remember what it said about weight, I was a little overweight and didn’t manage to lose any!

I paid for private MC tests at St Mary’s MC clinic in London Paddington, as I hadn’t had a good service from my NHS clinic. There is also an NHS clinic there too, some of the doctors see people privately.

Loopytiles I’m classified as overweight.BMI is 29. I’ve been to the recurrent mc clinic at st Mary’s but they didn’t find anything major. Recommended clexane and weight loss.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's miserable! I had to wait until pregnancy number 7 in order to meet our DD. Dr Gorgy at the London Fertility Academy is a miracle worker! He's helped us through two pregnancies so far and both have had successful outcomes. All of our losses happened at 6-8 weeks. We like you were told IVF wouldn't help as we had no trouble conceiving, just carrying through the first trimester. I don't know enough about weight as a factor but Dr Gorgy should be able to advise you. I hope you meet your rainbow soon x

That’s good that you’ve been to the clinic. If they recommended weight loss best try, know it can be really hard.

I'm 31 but was one of the youngest patients I met at the clinic. I also found the book Is Your Body Baby Friendly quite useful. I hope you find your answers soon xx

If you're overweight, even slightly, or have tsh above 2.5, get your antithyroid antibodies checked. They can cause problems with maintaining a pregnancy.

If it's autoimmune (which if you have antithyroid antibodies - then it is) then they can help by giving you levothyroxine to plug the gap and lower tsh. You'll need to possibly go totally gluten free and maybe dairy free if you do have antithyroid antibodies and take a number of supplements like selenium.

If they have all been relatively close together, you should look in to something called 'unfussy womb' where the womb lining accepts poor quality embryos when it should be rejecting them much earlier.

If you don’t have PCOS or a clotting disorder then it only plays a part if your BMI is 35 or more. If you do have those conditions then BMI of below 29 is best as they can cause miscarriage if you slip into obese territory.
