Help with ivf understanding

Hi there, I hope you don't mind me asking for some advice. My dsis has started the initial
Stages for ivf. She had her egg collection on Friday, they collected 4. on Saturday was told only 1 was successful in being fertilised.

does this mean they can only use that one egg? And if it doesn't work she will need to go through the egg collection again? I hate to ask her so many questions as I know she was quite upset by it yesterday (and quite rightly so) I just want to understand and support her.

Thank you all x
(Sorry if I offended or upset anyone by asking these questions)

Yes it means they only have 1 to use, that fertilisation rate is low compared to the average and depending on her ovarian reserve and age she may have been expecting more eggs. I have had cycles with low egg numbers and low fert rates and it's so disappointing, everyone says it only takes one which is true it does I know a lot who had success from 1 embryo but it's a numbers game and it's a good safety net to have some left to freeze too. Fingers crossed for her

Thanks @Lauren83 sorry to hear of your experiences.

I'm really hoping for a positive result from this. She will get the egg implanted in 8 weeks. She is youngish (mid thirties).

@Racheyg if she isn't having the embryo implanted for 8 weeks the one fertilised egg will need to make it to day 5 for freezing. Just because it is fertilised it doesn't mean it will make it. Just as an idea on my frost round 3 fertilised and one made it to day 5. My second round 19 fertilised and 15 made it to day 5. Fingers crossed this one makes it for her

Racheyg · 17/03/2019 18:37

@Ginandtonic31 can I ask how many eggs can developed / get collected at once? They only managed 4.

Wow, I didn't realise how low these odds were. I'm guessing it looks like more hormones and egg collection for her?

@Racheyg the number collected can completely vary depending on lots of things including her own individual body and egg reserve, the drug dosage and the number of follicles present to begin with.

My first round wasn't good. I had 4 eggs collected, 3 fertilised and 1 made it to blastocyst on day 5 for freezing.

My second round my dose was slightly higher and I had more follicles to begin with. 27 eggs were collected, 25 mature, 19 fertilised and 15 made it to day five and freezing.

Hopefully this will be the one for her.

Thanks for explaining @Ginandtonic31 I hope you had/have a happy outcome.

Not sure how many goes with the egg collection they get.

I had egg collection 5ish weeks ago.
2 mature eggs.
ICSI.
One fertilised but at day 5 was shit grade so frozen.
Now gearing up to start a different protocol end of March/beginning of April... basically starting the whole f*%#ing thing again- in the hope of more mature eggs, better fertilisation rate, better embryo grade, then transfer (probably june/July- will most likely be a frozen cycle as my progesterone last time was too high for fresh).
To quote another- the whole IVF thing is a mind f**k. A really expensive one at that.

I had only one egg fertilised. I thought it would never happen after that. She's currently asleep in the next room snoring. Good luck to everyone going through this.

Podemos · 17/03/2019 22:42

I had 21 eggs collected. 19 fertilized but only 4 were frozen at day 5. Clinic were happy that that number to freeze was within normal and that it didn't indicate issues.

They normally aim to collect between 10 and 15 eggs so your sister is probably really upset at there having only been 4, especially as then only one fertilised. In order for her to be able to use that 1 egg, it has to develop to day 3 and then to day 5 (if it’s being frozen because she isn’t having her transfer for 8 weeks). There’s a drop off and not all fertilised eggs make it to day 3 and of those which do, not all of them make it to day 5 so your sister is likely feeling pretty devastated.

Thank you all so much. I really hope you all get/get great outcomes.

I think she is going to call the hospital to find out her next steps. And to ask how many egg collections she gets.

It has been very stressful experience so far, and I think she has found the hormone injections tough.

@Racheyg
I can't really add to what the other ladies in this thread have told you. It's all correct.

You never know what your gonna get. There is never a way to tell how many eggs they'll collect.

My first round of IVF -they got 21 eggs, 17 of which were mature. 8 successfully fertilized. 2 implanted. Remaining not suitable for freezing. Result- pregnancy that ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. I need therapy after this.

9 months later: My second round of IVF, they got 8 eggs. 4 were mature & 3 successfully fertilized. 2 implanted. Result Negative result at test day.

IVF is a really difficult life experience. It's a challenge. Emotionally and physically. It's grueling physically and can put a massive strain on relationships. Your emotions aren't your own during treatment.

I would just like to say, your sister is lucky to have a sister, who has taken the time to inform herself in order to offer support and comfort.

Wishing her the very best x
