I have recently been told that i will be starting on gonadotropin. I have not had any treatment so far and have been told very little. Could anyone shed a little light on what I can expect/ how long it takes to get started?

It really depends on how your body will respond to it. Sorry I can't be clearer than that.

Gonadotropin makes follicles grow. Tgey'll want one to grow to a certain size, then you take a trigger shot to start ovulation. Then they'll either tell you when to have sex, or if you're doing iui or ivf when that is planned depending on which treatment the gonadotropin is for. I assume they told you which one it is?

If they give you to little gonadotropin the follicle will take longer to grow, if they give you too much then more follicles might develop. If there are too many they will have to cancel this cycle because it's bad for your health (ohss is dangerous). They might start on a low dose just to be sure.

You'll start the treatment when you're on your period. You'll probably get told to call once your period started after which they will make an appointment for a vaginal scan to check for cysts. After that you'll be told how mich gonadotropin to use and when to cone back. They'll keep doing vaginal scans to see the follicle grow. They might alter the dose as well. Don't get stressed if it'll take several weeks, they will get there in the end.

Which treatment are you going to do? It'll be easier to explain in more detail if we know if it is timed sex, iui or ivf.

Hi explodingkitten thanks a lot for responding. I am having the injections to trigger ovulation I believe- not ivf. Im Not entirely certain what they want me to do. I don’t have periods and my oestrogen level is low. Have you had this treatment? Did you have a good experience? Sorry i haven’t provided more info but I have been waiting for over 3 weeks to hear from the hospital and I’m starting to get impatient.

Ok. I had all the above mentioned treatments. No children yet, had a couple of miscarriages and an ectopic.

Gonadotropin will make your follicles grow. To be more precise: they will go on letting you inject until your follicle has grown enough. This can take a while.

I can only tell you how my cycles went, your clinic might do things differently. They gave me pills for ten days to make me have a period. I had to call or email when my period started. They then made an appointment for the next day (CD2) or the day after (CD3). At the appointment they did a vaginal scan for cysts. If there is a big cyst (never had one) you can't start but have to wait a cycle. They then gave me the medicine. They told me how much to inject each evening and to come back after a week. After a week I had another scan to see if the follicle was growing. They adjusted the dose and let me come back every 2,3 or 4 days for scans. When the follicle is bigger that 16 mm I had to inject a different drug. That makes ovulation happen after about 36 Hours. I had to have sex the day before and the day of ovulation. Then wait two weeks to see if it worked or not.

A normal woman will ovulate at around CD 14. With drugs it is mostly later. It sometimes took me 4,5 or 6 weeks to get there but I ovulated every time. They might want to check your blood occasionally too to see the hormone levels.
