2 miscarriages in a row after seeing heartbeats

Hi there, I'm currently going through my second miscarriage within the last 5 months. My first miscarriage was a few months ago, with monochorionic twins after seeing heartbeats at 6 weeks. My second (current) miscarriage was after seeing a heartbeat at 7 weeks. I have an almost 2 year old daughter (who I'm so grateful for), so I understand that rules out certain potential fertility issues. However I don't feel I have any real understanding about fertility and miscarriages and am keen to get more information so I can do what I can to avoid a third miscarriage in a row, or at least to understand potential causes better than simply assuming chomosonal abnormalities each time. I'd be grateful for any advice and/or details of London fertility specialists. Many thanks

I'm so sorry to hear what you've been through.

After my last miscarriage at eleven weeks, my clinic recommended to look into the following areas: full thyroid panel, natural killer cells, and MTHFR genetic testing.

The MTHFR test came up positive and I've since been learning a lot about how the body processes folic acid and realised that for 40% of the population, the advice to take folic acid as a pre-natal is actually one of the worse things you can do.

It's been helpful for me to have some control and feel like I'm doing something positive to influence my chances of carrying to term but ultimately, it's most likely it was a chromosomal issue that was unavoidable.

Research thyroid issues. I've had the same problem, one baby then lost two, it was highly likely caused by underactive thyroid, a lot of doctors aren't very clued up on it, so do your own research and see if you have any symptoms, then go and ask for tests.

This happened to me. I suspect they were just chromosomal abnormalities - the second one certainly was as I had the embryo tested after ERPC. If it does happen to you again and if you have an ERPC then even if the hospital doesn’t routinely arrange for that test to be done you can request and pay for it. UCH were very helpful about this for me.

I then went to see Raj Rai at St Mary’s (he has an NHS clinic but I went private and it was easy to book an appointment). He did a load of blood tests and said I have raised clot strength so should take aspirin in any future pregnancies. Unfortunately I’m knocking on now and have found it hard to get pregnant since I was 34 or so and so have only had one chemical pregnancy since the last ‘proper’ MC. But if I did get pregnant again I’d know what to do.

Thank you for all of your very helpful responses. I'm so sorry for your losses. Thanks to your advice, I'm now waiting on cytogenetic test results on the tissue from my ERPC as well as a number of blood tests. Hopefully I'll have some answers soon
