Levothyroxine before IVF

Hi all

My fertility clinic started me on levothyroxine before IVF as my TSH was slightly over 2.5 (it was 2.66). The dose was increased to 50 micrograms once daily (from 25 micrograms once daily) around the time of my embryo transfer, when my TSH was 3.2. There was an improvement in the TSH (repeat was 2.44) after dose increase. I'm now 9.5 weeks pregnant and wondering if any of you who were started on levothyroxine for similar reasons were told to continue it throughout pregnancy? I've had little guidance on this but had repeat thyroid function tests today, results awaited. I am still taking levothyroxine 50 micrograms once daily at the moment.

Thanks!

It's highly likely you will be on it for at least the rest of this pregnancy. It looks like you're being well monitored, which is a very good thing.

The demands on your thyroid increase during pregnancy. Your dose may (or may not) be increased again.

If you are on thyroxine prior to being pregnant your dose should increase by roughly a third once you are pregnant.

The GP should refer you to an endocrinologist for monitoring in pregnancy.

It varies between hospitals but my local hospital guidelines (which I tracked down as I didn't quite trust my GP to monitor closely enough) is very max TSH in first two trimesters of 2.5.

It's most important TSH is in range during first trimester from about week 14 baby starts making their own ( I think)

Hope that helps (I'm 19/40 with hnderactive thyroid hence why I've read up on it so much!)

Thanks, both. I'm waiting to be referred to the endocrine clinic. Will pop along and see my GP too.

Hi there,

I was put on levothyroxine in order to conceive as my tsh was 2.53 and fertility consultant wanted it under 2.5

25micrograms to be increased to 50 on BFP, I’m now 37 wks and other than being consultant led all the way through preg I’ve never seen anyone in terms of endocrinologist. They have tested my thyroid very regularly though, I think 4 or 5 times to date during preg.

Not sure that helps but think it must depend where you live xx
