Short Luteal Phase (4-8 day luteal phase)

Hi Ladies!

I'm just looking for a bit of advice. Been TTC #1 for 9 months now which I now isn't long at all. I've been tracking my cycles using bbt ovusense vaginal temping and using OPKs which shows I do ovulate.

My cycles vary in length but a few have been 25 days with ovulation on day 20. In my longest cycle I ovulate on cd43 of 51.
My luteal phase is very short. Longest has been 8 days and my shortest has been 4. I guess this means there is no chance of the egg implanting at all.

My doctors did bloods tests on cd15 a few months ago and refuse to do anything else as I've only been TTC for 9 months. I did have a ultrasound which showed everything was ok.

Has anyone experienced a very short luteal phase and gone on to find their luteal phase increase naturally overtime without medication? I've tried b6 for 6 months and nothing.

I'm worried that if I got bloods redone that 21day bloods won't help me as often I don't even get to 7dpo. Af shows generally at 5dpo. I'm debating going private as some gps don't believe in a luteal phase defect.

Thanks xx

Hello, yes it is very short.your periods seem to be very irregular, have you been diagnosed with PCOS? I don't know what to suggest as mine is 9 and drs don't want to do anything because I ovulate I they think it could be an underlying issue due to egg quality. However, I have started to take progesterone cream to see if it works. This is my second month and nothing has changed.B6 didn't work for me...have you checked your lp with temps?

gossipgirl28 · 12/08/2018 21:54

Thanks for your message.

I don't have PCOS so I'm not sure why my cycles are so irregular. Prior to talking bc they were 28days.

Yes I'm tracking my luteal phase by temping. It's really getting me down as we have been timing DTD around ovulation and mayb some months the egg has been fertilised but just not given the chance to implant.

I've got a doctors appointment on Thursday this week to see what else they will do as i can't properly even try conceiving as my luteal phase is so short.

If they say they won't do anything further then I'm going private to see a specialist who knows what to do next. Xx

I have a short luteal phase. My cycles are regular at around 23 days and luteal phase consistently short at around 8 days. I'm pretty confident it was b6 that worked for me and I now have 2 dc. I researcher it thoroughly and took 50mg. What dose of b6 are you taking?

gossipgirl28 · 13/08/2018 09:05

I was taking 2 tablets of 50mg B6 per day for 6 months but it hasn't extended my luteal phase x

Hi -sorry to hear you are having these problems. My luteal phase is also short, but longer than yours -between 8-10 days. I have seen a herbalist and accuputurist which has helped extend it a little. Since visiting he fertility clinic I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS. The doctors also weren’t interested in hearing about the luteal phase. However your cycles do really vary in length and they should be interested in that because that is unusual -I visited my doctors a fair few times and kept pushing and in the end it was worth it because I think I got a referral quicker than I otherwise would have done. I got referred at about 9 months -and said it have been 12 months-and I’m so glad I did because I have conditions that need help. I’m lucky in my area it’s only a year-i know some are two! It just might take a few visits-can you exaggerate how long you have been trying? I presume your day 21 bloods show no ovulation if they have been taken at the wrong time-this too should be a reason for a referral. I would be tempted to do another day 21, if only for it to show no ovulation because its hard for you to time the test right-then at least you have more reason for a referral.

Good luck!

I'm fairly sure irregular periods (oligomenorrhea) is a reason for earlier referral to fertility clinics for investigation - try have s google and push that with your gp

I had exactly this. Short and long periods and LPD.
And also a dsis with hypothyroidism.
Gp said cant be thyroid as im too thin. But could be pcos.
I had lots of blood tests. Showed no ovulation. Scan showed pcos.
Ended up with icsi for MFI. Complicated by the pcos.
Worked first time. (Obviously you get progesterone).
Ivf2 my tsh (thyroid hormones) was high and i ended up on thyroxine. But... My tsh was still quite high, and it failed. With the bleeding starting really early.
Second try for dc2 and my tsh was better and it worked.

Ovulation sticks dont work with pcos as LH is generally high. (I know you said you dont have it)

I have a short luteal phase - also between 4-8 days, and I’ve been pregnant twice with no interventions. I take the rainbow light prenatal vitamins, an extra dose of folic acid, and an omega oil capsule.

gossipgirl28 · 14/08/2018 11:27

@Kintan

This has given me some hope!

How long did it take you to fall pregnant?

Were you tracking your luteal phase using bbt? X

@gossipgirl28 there is always hope :) The first time it took 3 months, the second time 8 months, although I was still breastfeeding so I think that made it take a bit longer. Yep, using bbt, opks and tracking on the fertility friends app. Good luck :)

Kintan · 14/08/2018 14:10

PS get your thyroid checked out if you haven’t already. For ttc your TSH levels should be under 2.

stayinghopeful · 14/08/2018 22:59

My luteal phase was around 6 to 9 days - going to accupunture has helped to increase that by a couple of days. Appreciate it’s expensive though!

MonkeyToucher · 24/08/2018 10:53

My LP is around 9 days so a tiny bit longer than yours, but it hasn’t stopped me getting pregnant naturally.

DC1 it took us 15 months so were starting investigations - the dr told me a short LP wasn’t an issue (at the time I thought she was talking rubbish, but clearly not!). I’m not 13 weeks Pg with number 2 and this one was an accident so it can happen!

The only thing I have found is that with both pregnancies, I have had a very light “period” type bleed and then still been pregnant. This time I didn’t find out until I was 8 weeks as I had what I thought was a period, but I was in fact pregnant. So the egg was still managing to implant somehow!

gossipgirl28 · 24/08/2018 14:41

Currently 2dpo this cycle so il see how long my luteal phase is this time round. Really hope my luteal phase is longer than 8 days this time or I get a BFP!

My luteal phase length this year are as follows- 6 days, 4 days, 6 days, 8 days and 5 days.

I'm a keen runner but I'm not running this cycle post ovulation
Xx
