No sperm

Hi, my boyfriend has been told he has no sperm in his sample. Our doctor said there are no other tests to do and the only way would be to consider a sperm donor. I said could it not be a blockage? He said it’s highly unlikely. We have read online there are other tests that could be done. Does anyone know if the doctor is correct to dismiss us? I really thought there would be other tests he would send us for

They need to do blood tests for certain hormones. If these levels are ok, then it’s likely to be a blockage, and your DP is producing sperm.
If the hormones aren’t quite right (I think if they’re too high), then he may not be producing sperm. My DH also had a chromosome test, which could affect sperm count.
His levels were all ok. So, they removed sperm through an operation. And we used this in ICSI.

They have to do blood tests to find out more! Good luck

Was it your GP that did the test? If so, you need to ask for a referral to an infertility clinic. They definitely need to look into why before they just say to go straight to sperm donor.

My DH didn't have any sperm in both samples he gave, they then did blood tests to measure FSH, testostetone and LH and also did a US Testes to check for blockages etc. They found everything to be completely normal so couldn't give a reason for the lack of sperm. My nasty horrible gynae told us to forget it and use a donor. We have just had ICSI and they found plenty of healthy sperm, we have frozen them so he doesn't have to have his balls cut up again.

Was this your GP?

Fertility clinic will do tests and also consider TESE (surgical removal of sperm). You're still some way off donor sperm yet

Thanks all for your responses. It’s really helpful and made me feel a little better. I was very upset when my gp said this to me. Yes it was just one of our NHS doctors. My partner has to go back for one more sperm analysis but the gp also messed up and forgot to ask for another referral. So everything is taking forever. I am not far off 38 so I am concerned about my age and the time everything is taking. It’s going to end up 6 months for just the sperm analysis. We will go back to another doctor and ask for these blood tests Smile does anyone know if we can ask for these to be done now rather than wait for the next set of results? We will go back to the gp but we have not had much luck so far!

Pfrhul bit surprised at another referral. Our GP gave us the forms and the necessary cup first time, when they received the result it was an instant referral to the urologist and the form to do a folkw up 3 month sample, the next appt after the 3 month sample was automatically booked. BTW if you have male factor its an instant referral for fertility clinics, you do not have to wait undergo your tests first

I would ask them to refer you immediately. Do the repeat SA while you wait for specialist appointment. He should have routine bloods done for testosterone levels and I would ask them to check his prolactin levels (the latter is what caused our fertility issues and once it was treated we went on to conceive naturally).
