I had my first IVF two months ago, was put on 250IU Gonal F and they collected 8 eggs (1 from my right ovary and 7 from my left ovary).

I've been on on the following stimulation:
Day 1-3: 450 IU gonal F
Day 4-5: 300 IU gonal F +0,25mg Orgalutran

Today on day 6 of stimulation I had my first scan which showed 1 large leading follicle and two smaller follicles on my right ovary. No follicles on my left ovary.

The fertility specialist did not have any answers. How come I only get 3 follicles this time when they have double the dose of Gonal F?

Have anyone experienced something similar?

Hi @Leontine2018 sorry to hear there aren't many follicles.

I think the number of follicles varies from month to month regardless. I got 20 eggs on my first cycle so they reduced the drug on the second cycle and I got 22 and still got OHSS. So unfortunately it's not an exact science. My understanding. Is it doesn't mean another cycle you won't get more again x

Hi Leontine, sorry you haven't had such a good response this time around. The drugs will only stimulate whatever follicles are present at day 1, they won't create more follicles if that makes sense.

I had a cycle cancelled earlier in the year as I had only 3 follicles, and they were growing very slowly (on maximum dose of Gonal F).

I had another cycle with 7 follicles, starting on high dose and then going lower.

In terms of my future treatment I won't start stims again without having a day 1 or 2 scan to check my antral follicle count. Depending on how many are there I will go ahead or wait until the next month.

There are clinics who will go ahead with your 3 follicles, if they are a decent size you are still in with a chance. Good luck.

Thank you JeNeBaguetteRien for your reply, support and all the information. In the next treatment I will definetely ask for a day 1 or 2 scan. Leontine.

I had two failed cycles and one that worked. The higher the stimulation, the worse the results were. (Donor sperm so no male factor issues.)
Cycle 1: 300 iu daily, 6 follicles, 4 oocytes retrieved, 1 fertilised, bfn.
Cycle 2: 450 iu daily, 5 follicles, 1 fertilised but died before transfer.
Cycle 3: 150 iu every other day plus course of Clomid, 4 follicles, 4 oocytes, 3 fertilised, all AA quality, bfp. (Cycle 3 was what’s known as mini-ivf.)

So I don’t think the relationship between dose and success is as linear as you might think.

Thank you @DameSylvieKrin.

For how long did you stim during your last cycle and which clinic did you go to?

It was 8 days (with stimulation on 4 of them). I’m not in the uk unfortunately so can’t recommend a clinic, but if you are interested in mini/mild ivf maybe other posters would know one? Can dig out exact protocol if you like.

@DameSylvieKrin

Would love to have the exact protocol.

Do you have low ovarian reserve?
How did you find out?

No, it’s a quality rather than a quantity issue.
Will see if I can hunt down the protocol.
