Question about scan

Hi, I just got my GP's referral letter and finally booked an ultrasound on the NHS website after 1.5years ttc.
I'm probably being daft but the instructions were:

"ABDOMEN SCAN: For an Abdomen Scan you are required to starve for 6 hours before the scan. No food or milk but you can drink water as normal. PELVIS SCAN: For a Pelvis Scan you are required to have a full bladder for the time of the scan. You must drink around 1.5 litres of water at least 1 hour before the appointment. ABDOMEN/PELVIS/KIDNEYS For an Abdomen and Pelvis or Kidney scan you must starve & have a full bladder for the time of the scan. If you are required to have a full bladder, please bring extra water to the clinic in case you need to drink more water. Also, do not pass water until after your appointment."

Do I need to not eat and/or drink water?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Is it your dating scan? You need a full bladder for scans upto about 20ish weeks. I only know that from having lots of scans at various stages througout 2 pregnancies. The instructions youve been sent are shocking, no wonder you're confused !

As someone who has gone through dozens of scans I have never been asked to fast for them

Yeah pelvic scans and bladder/kidney scans you need a full bladder and internal scans need fasting but never for fertility reason.

I would call up and get clarification as the water is classed as restricted during fasting so you can't do both.

Good luck!

Sorry I wasn't clear, I am still ttc, the doctor said they would need an ultrasound to check everything on my end, dh is going to do his second sperm count test next month too. I might ring the gp on Monday and ask for more details! Thank you.

You'll be having a pelvis scan - follow instructions for that x

I've had a few of them now and follow the instructions for the pelvic scan only.

The others are looking at internal organs so want you to fast to keep food out of your system. If you have just having a scan for fertility they don't care about it.

I will warn you, in case you didn't know, that usually the scan to check your reproductive system is an internal scan. The last one I had they scanned externally first (so I had to drink and have a full bladder) and then they asked me to empty my bladder ready for the internal scan.

I would go ahead and drink the fluids as per the letter, but be prepared that they may need to scan you internally. Some places will give you a sheet or towel to cover with, but you may want to have a two piece outfit/longer top if it helps you feel more dignified x

Thank you everyone for the advice. They didn't do it internally. I'm waiting for results now.
