Low estrogen

I visited my GP 3 weeks ago as I’ve been TTC for 14 months. She told me to keep trying and come back at the 2 year point.

I got some private blood tests done on day 3 and they’ve come back with low estrogen (75 pmol/l or 20 pg/ml). LH and FSH are in the normal range.

I’m going to try to get a doctors appointment on Tuesday but I fear that I will get fobbed off again.

If you’ve had low estrogen please can you let me know what I should expect as next steps?

I’m not very good at being demanding so I know I need to go in feeling prepared.

I don't think the nhs check oestrogen when they do the fertility bloods so your GP will probably be a bit stumped! Are your periods regular and how old are you?

I echo what hoping says about periods, I had low oestrogen which wasn’t picked up on for a while but also no periods. I ended up being diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorhhea (even though they weren’t sure why as I wasn’t intensely exercising or underweight). It’s highly treatable though so don’t worry if you do have this xx

Do not expect your GP to do anything - mine didn't.

My estrogen on day 3 was very low (about 24pmol/l from memory). My GP never tested for it and I only had it done privately as the fertility clinic asked for it.

The clinic said it wasn't an issue for IVF as they alter the dosages to cover it, but I went to my GP to ask whether medically it was an issue (some medical conditions can cause low estrogen as can low body fat, excessive exercise and menopause - I have none of those).

All my GP would say was that hormone levels fluctuate in a cycle and that it means that my ovaries are a little impaired!

As long as you have regular cycles, they are not likely to do anything and women can still get pregnant naturally with lower estrogen levels x
