Want to apply for a new job but about to start IVF

I have been in my current job for 4 years but have seen an advert for a job which I think I would really enjoy.
I am also about to be referred for a round of IVF.
Part of me thinks it would be stupid to leave my current job given that I might get pregnant soon but then the IVF might not work and then I’ll regret not applying for this other job.
Should I apply or not?

Only you can make the decision that is right for you but what I will say is having a supportive manager has been so helpful in my job, they let me go for all my appointments and don't dock me, plus also offer emotional support. When do you start your ivf, where are you up to

My advice would be to apply. Definitely apply.

I’ve been in your shoes and didn’t apply for jobs for the same reason. I didn’t get pregnant and then felt even more crap about not being pregnant as I stayed in a job I hated which was like rubbing salt into my wounds. Infertility requires you to put many aspects of your life on hold, so I’d do what you can to reduce this as far as possible.

I found working out how much my current job paid in maternity leave, really helpful. It wasn’t really that much that I ‘lost out on’ by moving jobs. To me it was worth it to start a new job, rather than regret it if I didn’t get pregnant. Good luck with everything x

Similar predicament but I chose not to go for the other job as my manager was really supportive and has given me all the time I need to go to all my appointments. The deciding factor though was that, should the IVF work, my maternity leave and pay is good, most jobs require you are in employment with them for at least a year before qualifying for their full maternity allowance, state maternity allowance sucks. So for financial reasons and I didn’t want to venture into the unknown - would I like it? Would my new manager be supportive? Would I like my colleagues? - decided against it.
Do what feels right for you, I spent a while weighing up my pros and cons and discussing with DH

It’s a difficult one fiesty i understand not wanting to miss a opportunity but IVF is quite a stressful experience & you’ll need quite a bit of time off work to attend appointments. This might affect you settling in, any training you may have to do and building relationships with new colleagues. Personally I’d prefer to stay where I am, doing a job I know with people I know to keep stress levels down during my treatment but everyone’s different!

As a PP said it could be a good distraction for you and give you something else to focus on which isn’t a bad thing either!

In my current job I only get standard maternity allowance so that isn’t a deciding factor.
I am also in quite a stressful job where taking time off is hard anyway (I haven’t spoken to my manager about it yet). I also don’t know how supportive my manager will be.
It will be a little while before I start IVF as only just starting the referral process so I may just apply and see what happens.
I might not get offered the job and even if I did I don’t have to take it.

I used to plan stuff around when I was going to be having what treatment, and might therefore subsequently be pregnant. Now I just do the stuff. If you're interested in the job, whack in an application. Good luck!

I had to make the same decision and applied for new job while undergoing ivf. Was so worried about taking days off for appointments, but so far so good. Currently in my 2 ww and still on probation but I am glad I left my other job. So go for it, because there is reason for everything and you will be ok. Best of luck with ivf xx

If maternity allowance is not a deciding factor then I would say go for it and leave it with luck. I get 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay so that was a massive factor us

Application sent. Now need to wait and see if I get an interview!
