Hi All

I wanted to know what’s people’s experience of follicle count is? Not AFC once on IVF medication, I want to know about the initial investigations. I am asking because between all the consultants I have seen, they all have a varying opinion about what is a good count and what is PCOS

Hi Ani,

I have low AMH. Has gone down from 4.5 last year to 2.0 in October.
Over the last year I've had antral follicle counts of 5, 9, 8 when not on any medication.
Had 6 months of Clomid but never had and scans with it so not sure if it had any effect on AFC.

Had IVF recently, no AFC scan at the beginning of cycle but when stimming I only had 3 follicles. The clinic say they were surprised by the lack of response.

Hi @AniSL,

Not sure if this helps but my AMH is 8 AFC pre IVF was 9 but got 32 follicles and 20 eggs. Though no good embryos so we're not sure if that was poor egg quality of poor sperm quality. It's really impossible to try and predict what will happen I'm afraid x

Hi Hoping it's such a gamble isn't it, sorry it didn't work out. I guess my hopes were already low with my lazy ovaries.
Are you going to have another cycle? Fingers crossed for you x

There are varying opinions on cut off values for PCOS. I have no PCOS and had a very high follicle count for my age - about 24 follies at 36.

Ps to diagnose PCOS, they need to look at your hormone levels and not just follicles.

Yes planning another cycle. They've sen DH sperm for dna fragmentation rest as if this is high they will surgically relieve his sleep and this may help! If not then it's egg quality and tk quote the consultant "a numbers game" and said our chance is only 5-10% per cycle

Mine is 13-14.

Thank you all.

I am just fed up with the whole thing. I am beginning to believe they are all flipping clueless

My first AFC and bloods were in July, total of 6 follies, testosterone was 5.5 (way too high) AMH was 21.6. No real consultation done apart from told I had PCOS and then consultation closed.
Second in October showed AFC total 15, testosterone 1.2, AMH 23.7, told everything was fine and no PCOS.
February has now shown 26 follies, testosterone 1.3 and AMH 24.1 and now told possible PCOS.

They might just have different cut off values. And as you see, hormone levels fluctuate from month to month... Are you on the NHS or is it a private clinic? If you're having to pay, I'd explore other clinics if the current provision is frustrating.
