Has anyone had ivf at Aberdeen? I'm just waiting for an appointment with the nurse to get weighed so that I can finally be put on the waiting list after taking months to lose weight. Their website says 6 month waiting list but just wondered how realistic that is and how people found the process at Aberdeen?

Hi. Firstly, well done on losing the wait- not an easy task when you’re dealing with all these emotions. I had fresh transfer with Aberdeen end of last year and most recently an FET - currently in 2ww. The nurses are LOVELY but the drs ... err I’ll leave you to make up own mind. Actually, we’re considering moving our Frosties elsewhere, even if it means giving up NHS. It just seems like their protocol is ‘keeping throwing embryos at it and one will stick’ and no capacity for extra testing of thinking outside the box ( I’m 34, Mfi, beautiful blasts but not sticking). The admin side is disorganized - we were quoted 6-9 months but ended up waiting 4weeks! Then went out booking in and told DH needed another test which had an 8 week lead time. Told at least 3 months for follow up after failed cycle - was 4 weeks! Fingers crossed you get a better experience and a short list! Parking is terrible there so take the earliest appt in the day you can get. Happy to chat anytime, best wishes

Losing the weight even ... geez getting fixated on wait times xx

Alwayscommuting · 21/02/2018 19:49

This will be more of a rant than it ahould be but I don’t rate ARI at all. I had an app with fertility and as it happened the app was shortly after a misscariage. While I get what he was saying, that I was overweight and nothing would change while I was. The way the consultant put it across was completely tactless and hurtful.

Also the maternity department (that I went to to be told my pregnancy was lost) is right by a waiting room full of newborn babies. Or at least it was at this point. That was really hard to deal with.

Back on topic however congrats on losing the weight and good luck with it all x

Thanks for replying ladies! I've never spoken to anyone who had been to Aberdeen so good to hear something, even if it isn't great! Sorry to hear you both had bad experiences. The fact that it's all right next to maternity etc really gets to me too!

Blondie do you mean it was literally 4 weeks from being put on the list to starting your IVF? I don't know if the thought of that is more amazing or scary haha!

I didn't have a great first appointment to be fair. We are in for male factor and at the appointment she started going on about how they wouldn't do anything until the 2 year mark if nothing was diagnosed. Had to tell her about the sperm results and she then took 15 mins to find them. Basically said there was no point doing anything else so just to lose weight and then go straight to IVF.

I was thinking by time I get nurses appointment and through the waiting list I was looking at at least end of September...

Hi - so it was four weeks from being put forward to ivf (end of May) (confirmed MFI but has passed the 2 years by that point anyway) and then we got a letter 4weeks (end of June) later saying that we had reached top of the list and info evening was end of July (think they do them every two weeks) then 10 days after that we had our booking in appt - so should have started down cycle in August period BUT she decided he wanted extra tests for DH so we actually down cycled beginning of October, ER was 30/10 ET was 4/11. So remember, after you reach the top of the list you have to wait fir booking in appt and then your next period, then you have three weeks of northerone to stop period then 2 ish weeks of injections.

Sorry to bump this - looking to see if anyone else has had recent experience with Aberdeen?

JulieOcean · 16/02/2020 20:47

Hiya, just happened to be looking up Aberdeen fertility centre and saw this post. I recently had icsi there that eventually resulted in my baby girl who is 8 months old. Happy to try to answer any questions you have 😊

willithappen · 16/02/2020 21:50

@JulieOcean

Congratulations lovely!

Just looking for general experiences really! I'm away to have a HyCoSy there 25th Feb and then we go on IVF waiting list after.

How long was your waiting list?

JulieOcean · 17/02/2020 06:27

Everything went really quick for us I think we were told it could be upto a 6 month waiting list but we ended up only being a couple of months.

Also I know some of the messages above aren’t too positive but we found everyone really nice. Everything was explained to us well and any tests they did were thorough and explained well during it xx

nextweek · 17/02/2020 11:37

I'm on the waiting list for IVF at Aberdeen at the moment. @JulieOcean thank you for the feedback and congrats on your baby girl! It's good to hear positive feedback about the clinic. My heart always sinks when I hear negative stories, but I try to keep reminding myself that everyone and every situation is different so we're all going to have different experiences and feelings about it. I've had a few appointments so far and encounter a few different doctors and nurses and they've all been really nice and easy to talk to.

willithappen · 17/02/2020 13:00

@nextweek
Sorry to hear you are in this position also but also happy to see someone going through the same place as me I can talk with! How long have you been on the list for?

nextweek · 17/02/2020 13:24

@willithappen we've only been on the waiting list for a couple of months, we got told it would be a six month wait time, but maybe it'll be sooner, fingers crossed anyway!
How has your experience with the clinic been so far?

willithappen · 17/02/2020 13:59

@nextweek fingers crossed for you for it to be a quick process! The wait is horrendous isn't it? I've done nothing but google and research about HyCoSy's since being booked in so keen to just get it done and out the way with now!

I've had an okay experience. Only one appointment so far, had a letter out summing up everything. However my partner has 1% morphology and they are not interested in that as an issue as everything else with him is okay so they reckon that it's an issue with me and my tubes! I'm not 100% sure it is but going for the test anyway. Only thing I'm not happy with is them not seeing that as an issue. If my tubes are fine they are putting us down as unexplained infertility...

How many appointments have you had there so far? We are going on the list on the 25th after my appointment apparently

nextweek · 17/02/2020 14:59

ugh, the waiting is awful @willithappen I sometimes have to step away from Google so I don't drive myself mad!!
Yeah you might as well do the test then see what's what. We've been diagnosed with MFI, poor count and morphology, so we'll be getting IVF with ICSI. I've had blood tests and an internal scan which all looked fine. They're not checking my tubes or investigating me any further since MFI is our primary issue. Is the HyCoSy the one where they put dye through your tubes to check for any blockages?

We've had 3 appointments, our initial one after GP referral then follow ups after doing a second SA and blood tests for my husband.

I'm keen to ask them about the pros and cons of a fresh ET versus FET, there's some stats on their website that seem to show that FET is more successful than a fresh ET if you're over 35, but not sure if other factors would need to be taken into consideration or if I've picked that up correctly.

willithappen · 17/02/2020 16:00

@nextweek yeah that's the one. Terrified for it tbh! I've heard good things about it too though and it being really good for afterwards so will see!

Really hope you get that call/letter to say you are high up on the list soon!

nextweek · 17/02/2020 16:19

@willithappen None of these procedures are the most pleasant to go through, I can definitely think of plenty other things that I'd rather be doing, haha!, but if it gets us the results we want then it'll all be worth it :-) Lots of luck for your test

willithappen · 17/02/2020 18:04

@nextweek for sure!

Keep me updated please :) not only for the clinic experience but because I'm crossing everything for a positive result for you!

I'll keep updated regarding my experience also :)

nextweek · 18/02/2020 10:14

@willithappen I'll definitely keep you updated, and keeping my fingers crossed for you to!

pixelflower · 24/02/2020 03:14

@JulieOcean Congratulations on your baby girl. Much as I hate that anyone goes through this it's good to see people from the same area as me here. We have our first appointment on Thursday and starting to get anxious. Is there anything you wish you'd known/been prepared for before your first appointment?

JulieOcean · 24/02/2020 08:24

@pixelflower thank you!
Aww that’s great you’ve got your first appointment finally! There’s not anything I can think of specifically. I’d just say to ask any questions at all you can think of so you’re not wondering things after. They were great when we were there at answering things and keeping us informed of what was happening Xx

nextweek · 24/02/2020 10:39

@pixelflower Good luck for your appointment on Thursday. Our first appointment was really straightforward, they ask general health questions, took our weight, height etc then talked over the results of the tests we'd had so far via our GP. There isn't really anything I wish I'd known or asked. The staff are all really friendly. We've never been kept waiting either, all our appointment have been bang on time, which helps reduce the anxiety!

pixelflower · 24/02/2020 12:15

Thank you both, that's great to know. I tend to try and find out as much about something before I go as I can but Google hasn't been too helpful. Should hopefully be slightly less anxious/an emotional wreck 🙈🤣

willithappen · 24/02/2020 13:34

Agreed with the other ladies, nothing too daunting at the first appointment, maybe just the internal vagina scan but depends how you feel about those? I don't mind them too much, nothing painful just uncomfortable at times. They let your partner be in the room if you need

I'm back there tomorrow for the HyCoSy. Terrified of that one!

At my initial appointment they did tell me to stop googling things because I basically got myself all off in a twist about what could be wrong and assuming things. Asked them to check for everything and they could tell I'd been googling/over thinking it all

pixelflower · 24/02/2020 16:28

@willithappen hope tomorrow goes well for you. Just had to Google that 🙈 I keep trying to step back and not Google and jump ahead of things but it's harder sometimes than others.

nextweek · 25/02/2020 08:52

@willithappen Good luck with your HyCoSy today, hope it goes as well as possible!
We got our letter in for our appointment to discuss starting treatment, it's in early April, eeek!! We have to go to an information evening first then our 1-2-1 with the doctor is a few days later! Suddenly feeling very nervous!
