No sperm - devastated

DH and I have been TTC for 12 months. We are lucky to have a good doc who was willing to send us both for tests. I had 3 x 21 day blood tests, 2 were negative and 1 positive for ovulation. DH results came back yesterday with no sperm. We are both in shock and devastated by this result.
Going to continue to explore our options (including a 2nd test for him) but just needed to share and hopefully gain some words of wisdom from others.

Hi sorry to hear your results aren't what you hoped for. I know they literally only need a few sperm for ICSI so it might be worth looking into your partner adjusting his lifestyle factors (healthy BMI, stop smoking, no alcohol, no caffeine etc). My husbands count was low and the GP said repeat in 3 months but we pushed for referral at that point, saw the specialist a month later and listed for ivf with ICSI straight away - half way through my cycle now. DH has this and we had counselling in the clinic - has this been offered?

@Maniacmum No we haven't been offered counselling yet.

He's going to have a second sample tested but the doc didn't seem too hopeful for a different result due to an operation he had when he was younger. What he had done apparently carries the risk of this issue which we weren't aware of.

@hoping2018 He already leads a really clean lifestyle, never smoked very rarely drinks, fit, already on decaf. It's not a low volume if sperm, it's not sperm.

Its reasonably straightforward to extract sperm from the testicles and freeze it if the issue is with the vas deferens. I know several couples who have had this and successfully conceived via IVF x

snow this is why we are currently doing ICSI. My husband had sperm removed through an op. His blood tests all came back normal, so there must be a blockage somewhere.
It is stressful until you know that there is definitely sperm, which can be used.
Hopefully you are able to use ICSI in the future.

So my SIL and her DH are having issues conceiving, they have been trying for 12 months, she is 28, he is 32, she has PCOS, he has just had his 2nd semen anaylsis done and the results have come back has zero sperm. The consultant has said theres no point in fixing ‘him’ and is putting them forward for IVF, so he will have an OP to get his sperm extracted.

Don't get disheartened, my DH had the same result and we were gutted. We went through and followed through test via a urologist and they put My DH though sperm retrieval surgery. We now how lots of frozen swimmers, so don't be disheartened go through the process and keep hope, the doctors know what they are doing

Hi, I usually lurk but wanted to offer you some hope as I've been where you are now. My OH result came back completely azoospermic in late 2014. After a surgical extraction, we had 5 vials of spermicide frozen, and after 3 rounds of IVF with ICSI, we got our BFP. The resulting bruiser is currently 8 months old and asleep on my lap. Getting the initial result was devastating for us both, but it's not necessarily game over. Good luck!

My son has azoospermia, fully investigated including brain CT scan and found no cause.
Him and is wife are parents via IUI.

I'm a parent via surgical sperm retrieval and ICSI/IVF. DH has azoospermia. we had our first round on the NHS, including retrieval. It was a BFP! The frozen vials are what we're still using TTC second although haven't been successful so far.

Whether surgical retrieval will help depends on whether azoospermia is caused by a blockage or whether sperm is just not being made at all.

My DH has Azoosperma. I remember the day we found out so well. it was 19 years ago. I feel for you.
We started a round of ICSI and DH had a TESA but no sperm were retrieved so that was the end of that.

My DH has less than 1 million sperm count. His S.A is too poor quality to freeze, we have just done ICIS where there we just TWO good sperm and the rest 'twichers' all was used to fertilise 13 eggs. Two made it to blastocyst we are on 2ww.
The next cycle we may also use SSR ??

Quick update on my story, doc has referred us to bath fertility, just waiting for the appointment letter to come through. It's been a tough month for us playing this waiting game but reassuring to hear some positive stories.

My husband had no sperm due to chemotherapy as a teenager. We are now the proud parents of three adopted children. We did have a lot of therapy as we considered using a donor but in the end decided it wasn't for us. Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Don’t give up hope. Like you my DH both results came no sperm. It was a real shocked for us. We went for IVF and he did a surgical retrieval. They did find sperms but they were twitching and immotile and they gave us less then 10% success. Anyway we went ahead with the cycle but it failed. After that we did a lot of research and we found a brilliant urologist in London who put DH on medication for 6 months. The results after medication went up to 50% swimming sperms and he didn’t even need to do another surgery. I had second IVF but sadly ended in early miscarriage but we are planning for another one next month. All best of luck

Hope you don't mind me asking but what medication did the urology doctor put your husband on to help? My husband received results of his testing yesterday and they were low on all levels so I'm just blindly looking for any advice

My husband was on Tamoxifen for few months. I really do recommend to see a male fertility specialist. Our urologist was brilliant, he went through history and did few other tests and give a medicition plan to follow.

I normally lurk around on these forums but never post but husband was diagnosed with complete azoospermia yesterday so still processing. He’s also being referred to Bath fertility for further tests. So lovely to hear so many positive stories so thank you for some light in a dark time!

If you don't mind me asking @snowfee what op did your OH have? My OH is just about to have analysis done. He also had an op as a child.

DH is azoospermic due to bilateral undescended testis as a child. After advice were given option of sperm retrieval via testicular biopsy but low chance so opted for donation. Found a brilliant match abroad and imported sperm. 2 children, both as close in features we could get. Friends that know can't believe how good a match we have.

@jellybeans81 he had bilateral undescended testis so the op was to fix that. He was diagnosed when he was about 3 but didn't have the op until he was 16. He's also had 2 hernias which are also a side effect of having the op latter in life.
