Hi, so I went for my
Hycosy scan today but the doctor couldn't do it as it was too painful and he couldn't get the catheter in, he said we don't need it for IVF, has this happened to anyone else? He said it's quite common x

My HyCoSy got cancelled when the doctor couldn't get the catheter through my cervix. In my case, she sent me off for a hysteroscopy to check there wasn't any underlying problem (which there wasn't - the doctor who did that reckoned they must have just had an off day on the HyCoSy day!).

You don't need it specifically for IVF because really it's to check whether your fallopian tubes are clear and IVF basically skips them anyway. But the question I would ask, in your situation, would be do they anticipate you experiencing any issues with IVF transfer and are they going to do eg a mock transfer to maximise the chances of transfer going smoothly?

I had a horrendous hycosy experience. The catheter went in but kept coming out and having to be reinserted. They tried alternative equipment to try to get it to stay but it continued to come out whenever they started putting dye in (which tends to be the uncomfortable bit in a routine hycosy). After that, they only got dye in to one tube (which was patent).
It was an incredibly painful hour of my life and I was lying in a significant puddle of blood by the end from my cervix being so aggravated. I'd consider myself to have a high pain threshold and I would never have one again. It was an experienced doctor as well.

Went on to have IVF. No issues at all with any of the processes (catheters for lining tests, endometrial scratches, embryo transfers, etc).

As pp said, if you're going to be referred for IVF anyway, it's sort of irrelevant as IVF skips the need for patent tubes. Sometimes if a tube blockage is the cause of infertility, then there's a small chance the hycosy process can clear it. But I'm not entirely sure what the benefits are to be honest! 😁
