Poor sperm morphology

Hello everyone
I must say am glad for the advice and support. I first thought that i had infertility problems. I could not explain why i am not getting pregnant yet i am of good health. The only problem that i could associate to infertility was painful menses. So my husband and I agreed to see a specialist. He was taking me for a check-up. That is what we thought. Every test showed that i had no problem. So he suggested sperm analysis for my husband. shock on us, he had a very high percent of abnormal sperm morphology. The normal sperms were less than one percent. it was a very low moment for us. Doctors said that it is not a 'suicidal' case and there is hope of improving sperm morphology. He suggested diet rich in zinc and exercise. However, we are worried that it might not work. We will try everything possible and stay hopeful. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Hello 😊 Please stay hopeful! My OH had 1% normal forms and doc said this was bad. He also had a testicular varicocele on which he had surgery on in September. He has been taking Selenium and Zinc supplements prior to the surgery. He had another test just before surgery and had gone up to 2% just by the supplements alone! Was due to have another test end of this month, however we are 5w5d pregnant 💖 Good luck!

nik1985 that's great news, congratulations! My DH was diagnosed with a varicocele a couple of years ago (he didn't have surgery) before we were ttc but we are almost 1 year down the ttc line now so wondering if it is causing issues Sad Was your DH advised surgery because you were ttc?

Thank you! It was causing him a lot of pain and discomfort, especially in the Summer months however Doc wasn’t that keen on him having surgery as he said it doesn’t increase fertility 🤔 However, his pain and discomfort has all gone, and as for his fertility - we don’t know for sure but a blooming big coincidence 😂 is your DH having any pain etc?

Hello nik1985 - my husband has been diagnosed with two varicocele and it does cause him quite a bit of pain. We've been referred to a urologist, and just waiting for our appointment.

I'm keen for OH to have the operation, for the pain as much as anything else. Was the operation a big inconvenience? Recovering was OK?

Final question (!) - had you been referred for IVF or were they attempting to help improve your DH's scores first??

Thank you so much x

Hi bakingqueen25 :) The op was a day procedure and he recovered within a few days - he did have a slight complication which meant he had to stay in hospital a few hours longer and just be a bit more careful - but this isn’t the norm. He is glad he had it done as more than anything it helped the pain. The GP had said that it would be difficult for us to conceive and take longer than usual, and we should be prepared to go down IVF route. TBH, a lot of the supplements etc OH took he found out by his own research - GP wasn’t the most helpful. Good luck!x

My DH is azoospermic, all his hormonal tests and ultrasound came back normal, everything is where it should be so they declared that they could not explain why the sperm was not maturing. We were advised to take Proxeed and generally improve lifestyle, the usual mandate of no alcohol and regular expertise and no this and no that. DH urologist advised that TESE May be our way forward. My DH is due to have another sperm analysis after his 70 day regeneration period is up so will let you know if there any difference

nik1985 just come across this thread again.
DH gets occasional pain, which is why he went to Dr in the 1st place but not all the time and not like excruciating just a dull sort of ache so the dr said surgery wasn't needed.
Did they say whether the low % normal forms was caused by the varicolcele or unrelated?

Merrz · 26/01/2018 08:57

AniSL yes please keep us posted. I think that is our next plan, try a few months of improved lifestyle then go see the Dr is still no BFP

My husband had

JJPP123 Congratulations!! The crazy array of vitamins also worked for us 😂 x

No booze or fags and a healthy diet can improve morphology. That's what worked for us - we have a DS through ICSI.

Hi OP

Sorry to hear re sperm morphology.
My DH had sperm analysis last year and it came back at 1%

One GP said it was no issue as the other parameters were normal, another GP agreed with me for a secondary care referral.

At the fertility clinic the doctor basically said we should refer for self-funded IVF and didn't really comment too much on the morphology but apparently 4% is the minimum normal level.

Anyhow, we conceived about 6 weeks after that appointment and I'm now 15 weeks pregnant.

My DH tried (not very hard) to cut down on alcohol & cigarettes, I kept telling him off each time his laptop was in his lap at home (most evenings).

I bought some tablets for him- Wellman conception I think- several weeks later I found them all in the bathroom cupboard and he'd probably only taken a dozen.
He said they made him feel sick as he always took them on an empty stomach in the morning.

All my tests came back normal, the only thing that changed was I had 2 sessions of acupuncture & took Chinese medical herb teas for about 6 weeks before I conceived,

I'm 39, we have a 3 year old and I had a missed miscarriage summer 2016, it took over 12 months to conceive this pregnancy.

Good luck, get your oh to try the supplements- vit C & Zinc etc

My Sister-In-Law and her DH are going through similar, She has Been trying for over a year and went for all the tests, she has long cycles and diagnosed with PCOS, he went for a SA and it came back no sperm,

He has gone for a X-Ray and came back as nothing found i.e. blockages etc, he has been for a second SA and they both have a meeting with the fertility consultant this morning.
