Infertility

Cyst at baseline scan

Went for baseline scan today and I have a small cyst on my left ovary so I've been put on birth control for a month as this apparently helps get rid of it. The clinic told me this was fairly common? I wasn't quite sure why the cyst would affect the treatment but they said it would so we have to delay. Has anyone else had this?

Yes we did for cycle one. We went ahead on advice as it was quite small.
That cycle wasn't great for us; we had 10 or so eggs (which is okay) but only got one blastocyst from them. Almost all the eggs came from the non cyst ovary. No one knew for sure, but it seemed likely that the cyst got in the way of that ovary producing more eggs. This is totally anecdotal as I don't know the evidence, and tbh I don't think it would've made much odds, but I do think it affected the outcome not treating it - in terms of egg count, not the quality! For the sake of a month, you might as well try anything that could help, esp if that's the advice of the clinic :)

Basically, a cyst will tend to hoover up all the stim meds, so if you try to stim while it's there, you potentially end up with just a bigger cyst and few eggs.
