Hi everyone.

Has anyone used metformin to help with ttc with pcos? My last day of this round is in 2 days but haven't come on my period yet. How long has it taken for all you ladies to actually come on your period after taking the metformin?

I'm taking the 500mg 2x daily
I know it's only 1 month and these things take time. but was really hoping to come on and see that it's actually working although I did have really slight spotting a couple of times throughout the month but that was it.

Thank you x

Hi,

I have been on Metformin for around 8 weeks I think. I'm on 3 x 500 per day which I built up to. My last cycle was 5 weeks 6 days which for me is a significant improvement. So I would say for me it has done something. At my last hospital appointment they mentioned they prefer you to have done at least a good month on Metformin before starting other treatments so I would say they probably expect it to take a good month to start making a significant difference.

How long are your cycles usually?

I've taken Metformin for PCOS for years. Did your prescriber explain the mechanisms by which it might be useful in PCOS? Like the link between blood sugar and hormones?
I never had irregular periods so that wasn't an issue for us, we just had unexplained fertility that meant we couldn't conceive. I was ovulating fine. And also I know lots of people with irregular periods who have conceived with a bit of intense ovulation tracking.
Metformin did help me lose weight and when I take it and eat healthily, my PCOS symptoms are better. I guess it can take a while for your sugar and hormone levels to balance out so give it a while longer and then go back to Drs if your periods are still whack.

I've been on Metformin for about 4 months now. Prior to that I hadn't had a period for 10 months - I had one a few weeks after starting the metformin then one ten weeks later and am waiting for number three (eight weeks after my second one). So I definitely think you need to persevere a little longer to see if it works for you...sorry that's probably not what you wanted to hear as I know the waiting is the worst part of all of this!
