Ivf- so growth at day 5

I had eggs collected on Tuesday. Only three. 😢 they called on Wednesday to say they had fertilised. They called again on Friday to say they were looking good so would take them to day 5 blastocyst. Call today, transfer day, said it didn't look good. Slow development and they weren't expecting to transfer this cycle. They said they had seen cases where the growth sped up and they could transfer tomorrow, (day 6) but don't get your hopes up.

Just wondered if this had happened to anyone else? Any positive stories? Heartbroken.

I d 3 fertilised. 2 survived the night. The other two weren't growing so they wanted day 2 transfer. (my friends a fertility doc in tge states and said wait for day 3) so we did day 3 transfer and told not to get hopes up.
1 failed and 1 split and I ve 7 yr old twin boys.. I took a suppository for 6 was post transfer and stayed in bed for 10 days.. totally ort but it worked

How far behind were they?

We had an egg collection this month and five of our blasts were (very) early blasts (one was a morula, not even a blast) on day 5. However, they carried on and became expanded/hatching blasts on day 6. Ours were poor quality but often they can be very good on day 6. Statistically, girls' embryos are slower to develop. As boys' embryos are faster, 70% of blasts hatching/hatched on day 5 are boys and the slower ones tend to be girls.

Having said that, I probably wouldn't have a fresh transfer on day 6 (unless hatched or hatching early in the day). There is plenty of research demonstrating that day 6 blasts tend to miss the window of implantation opportunity in the uterus so success rates are a lot lower than for day 5 blasts.

On the other hand, if they are frozen and thawed + put back 5 days after ovulation (so making up that one day again), they are almost as successful as blasts frozen on day 5 ( say -5% or so).

So you're likely to still be in with a chance.

I'm sorry it's so shitty for you and keep my fingers crossed for them carrying on developing and looking good tomorrow.

Thanks guys.

Really interesting about girl vs boys developing at different rates. I got the impression from the embryologist that it's slower than that though, although didn't ask specifics as I was too upset! Kicking myself now!!

Thanks. Sadly not. Absolutely gutted. 😢 now trying to decide to try again or not given the rubbish outcome this time.
