Sperm Morphology

So DH had his swimmers looked at earlier in the week and we've been told that only 1% are the correct shape and the rest are not. Aside from that there's lots of them and they're moving fine, so it's just the shape that's the issue.

Teamed with my PCOS we were told by the Doctor that there's very little chance of us conceiving naturally and that the best route is IVF (whether or not this was a sales tactic I'm not sure - we've had to go private since all our local clinics no longer fund treatment).

We saw the nurse afterwards who said there is potential for improving DH's sperm quality with lifestyle changes, but she didn't seem convinced.

Has anyone managed to turn their numbers around by doing so? Or fallen pregnant naturally under the same circumstances?

Out of interest has your DH had more than one sample done? My DH had one sample last Nov where motility was very low. We were advised at NHS fertility clinic that it is normal for there to be variation so it was worth doing another sample as it had by then been a few months. The new sample was within the normal range and the motility had tripled. We had our revisit appointment yesterday and they advised whatever DH has been doing to continue. I don't feel that he really did very much different but the things we were advised were not much alcohol, a supplement containing zinc such as Wellman and not letting the balls get too hot. They reiterated the not getting hot thing yesterday at our appointment. Suggested loose boxers, not sitting down too long as you 'cook them' etc.
Best of luck whatever route you end up needing to take.

We managed to improve my DH's sperm morphology from 1% to 5% with 2,000mg of vitamin C. When we did IVF ( I also have PCO and egg maturation issues) his sperm was excellent according to the embryologist.
There is a lot of info on how to increase male fertility here

DH's sperm improved slightly which appeared to be due to less alcohol, vitamin C, ubiquitol and fertilaid. We still needed ICSI but i feel it gave us a better chance?

Just got back from the Dr's and was told that my Dp has no normal sperm at all and IVF is the next step but I'm nearly 39 and my BMI is 30 so theasy fertility clinic won't see us until I loose at least 2 and a half stone which is doable but will take time and time is not on our side. Also Dp says he needs to think about whether he'd be happy to use a sperm donor as it wouldn't be his child biologically feel so low right now

Sorry forgot to say we were also told that he had very low sperm count too, so very unlikely to conceive naturally

In our case DH had low morphology (less than 1%) and I had PCO and reoccurring endometrial polyps, 2 years TTC without success. Our doc said our only option was IVF after the polyps were removed for the second time. While we waited for my op (2 months) hubby started taking fertility blend vitamins and pycnogenol, wearing loose boxers and cut back on alcohol a lot, plus he ate a clean diet with whole foods and lots of veggies. He wasn't tested again but despite not having much hope we conceived naturally the cycle after I had the polyps removed, just before we were planned to start IVF. I was also doing fertility massage to help with PCO, not sure if it had any impact.

We're just going through ICSI. DH had normal count, excellent motility and 0% morphology. He has never smoked or been a big drinker. For a few months he's been extra healthy, I.e. 8 of his 5 a day, loose pants, Profertil and Pycnogenol etc. His morphology improved to 2% at some point and on the day of ivf egg collection was back down to 1%.

It sounds like chances of a natural conception are very slim in your case (a fluke rather than a statistically significant chance).

Also, do you know the exact number and motility for your DH? 'Fine' is quite vague. (The average would be a count of 255m and total motility of 61%).

DH had rubbish morphology and we were told we needed ICSI rather than standard IVF as a result. DD1 was the result of an ICSI cycle. Morphology didn't improve. DD2 happened naturally and was conceived 9 months after DD1 came along, a lovely surprise.

My DH got his sperm sample results back in June, 0% morphology and along with my pcos things weren't looking great and we had been trying for our 2nd baby for 18 months. The doctor recommended Proceed Plus or zinc. I ended up getting him Pregnacare (the his & hers conception tablets), zinc tablets & a zinc and vitamin c effervescent tablets. I fell pregnant in July, 8 weeks pregnant tomorrow, and I definitely think the tablets helped his sperm issues and losing weight and being on Metformin helped my pcos issues. Hth Flowers

I got pregnant quite quickly twice in just over a year (had to have a termination the first for -unrelated- medical reasons) and found out my oh has 1% morphology (had a test done just in case pre-emptively before trying "properly"). I found out I was pregnant about 2 days after the test was carried and only found out about the results a couple of weeks later. I'm very surprised and was told by the doctor that we'd been very lucky to conceive twice relatively quickly considering.
It might be the case that the test results were affected by other factors and you might want to retest in different circumstances (which I'm thinking of doing should we try again at some point)...

Morphology isn't as important as count and motility afaik.
Also remember it's a moment in time and men vary like mad. When we went for one appt DH sample was rubbish, they said I icsi. On the actual day of EC he was normal on all fronts Smile
