Hi all,

Been lurking in the conception threads for a while but now switching here after some crappy news today...

Me and my other half have been TTC for over a year. I assumed the issue was solely with me as I have quite a stressful job but tests on my DPs sperm have shown he has Low sperm velocity (he thinks this is what was said as he panicked when realised news wasn't good) with a score of 1/4?

Is velocity the same as motility? If so is there hope? I'm panicking and he has told me I cannot tell anyone. Any help much appreciated x

You should have several figures - count, morphology, motility, vitality are the main ones. Not heard of velocity, I don't see why speed should matter as long as they move in a forward direction.
My husband has

Thank you for replying ScottishGirl- sorry to hear your ivf was unsuccessful. Fingers crossed for next time.

I am annoyed I didn't go with him. He was in shock when he explained tbh. The gist was all of the results were normal except for one where he got a score of 1/4. My intense googling(!) leads me to think this was motility or velocity. He originally said it was viability but I think that is a % score. Sounds like the dr was matter of fact with him and said if result is the same next time then he will refer to a specialist.
He has to go and have the test done again in four weeks so I guess we just need to try and be patient and see what happens with that. Horrid and crap situation anyway. And I thought the TTC was stressful before!

Heart goes out to everyone in the same position and going through IVF ❤️ best wishes to all x

I don't understand the 1/4, all the results should be % apart from the count.
Also sperm renews every 3 months, so normally there should be 3 months between the 2 tests. So I don't imagine the result will change unless it was just a bad sample collection.
Is he on fertility supplements? Would be worth a go but won't help in time for his next test.
Wish you all the luck, if it's any consolation mfi is in theory the easiest infertility issue to treat due to IVF ICSI technique.
xx

Thanks for the advice. Will look into vitamins and see if he will ring the doctors tomorrow to understand results further. Agreed on the retest as I read the same about renewal this evening as part of my literature review(!)

Thanks again and good luck to you too x

If possible can he ask the Drs for a print out of the results? We have a printout listing each of the things they look at and what the result was and then the next column says what it is expected to be and then comments at the bottom. It may help to have it so you can have a little look online yourself to hopefully feel reassured. DH had an issue with his results and was quite worried but when we went to the fertility clinic Dr explained there are 3 main things they look at and the other 2 were normal so he felt a bit better about it.

Thanks SoapyChoc. I'm going to try and get him to phone the GP again to get some clarity. I think he has put his head in the sand a bit about it so don't want to push him too hard. Fingers crossed when he does the retest things look better.
