Any experience with varioceles?

DH has a DD(7). He had a low count when she was conceived, but now it is practically non-existent. After a year of TTC, we decided to adopt in December last year. We are now on Stage 2 and very excited about it Smile

However, the doctor wanted to follow up DH's infertility for health reasons, because he has had some testicular pain. A urologist now believes he has a suspected variocele, and DH will be having an ultrasound to determine this. If he does, and he has surgery to remove it, there is some evidence that it could improve his sperm count and quality.

If I'm honest, I feel a bit crushed. We have been so so excited about adoption, and we will 100% still be going through with it no matter what. But I feel like this potential diagnosis has got my hopes up again. We've already decided that I am not going back on hormonal contraception (although we will use contraception when we're at the matching stage of adoption, as we have been asked to) because it would be pointless. I was so content with the idea of us adopting and completing our family, even though I had always wanted two more children as well as DSD, and now I feel really conflicted.

Obviously I don't want DH to be in discomfort so if it is a variocele causing him pains then he will have it removed. But the idea of then going back on long-term contraception when once all I ever wanted was to fall pregnant makes me feel awful.

Don't know what I want from this post to be honest, maybe just to get it off my chest!
