Hi, I start bemfola injections tomorrow and have taken my first metformin tonight. From tomorrow I will be taking 2 x 1000mg metformin having never taken it before. How bad is it going to be?! Also, how does it make you feel bad - is it stomach pains? I'm scared!

HI Avocado,

I was prescribed 1,500 daily (3 times a day with food) however i am only taking 500mg with my evening meal. You are supposed to start with 500 and gradually increase up to 1,500 usually (2,000 is a higher dosage). Metformin is notorious for giving horrible bowels Blush including winds, all sorts of noisy movements and diarrhea! Some people report nausea and reduced appetite. I read a lot about it on Fertility friends.
I wasn't able to increase my dosage from 500mg, at the end of the day this isn't an essential medication for the IVF and if you can't tolerate it you don't have to take it.
See how it goes! I hope it is not toooo bad for you! xxxx

Thanks for the info Veinarde Smile! I took 1000mg last night and 1000mg 30 mins ago. How soon did you notice the effects? X

I was on 1500mg now reduced to 1000mg because I am pregnant. I suffered no ill effects at all. It fixed my periods (I was bleeding constantly) and I was pregnant within 6 months of starting it.

Avocado, I guess some people are not having any side effects. So you might be ok! Xxx

I should add I have been very careful to only take it after food. From what I hear taking it on an empty stomach is asking for trouble

Avocadosmoothie · 13/06/2017 21:25

Thanks for the tip, I had heard it's not a good idea to take on an empty stomach!
