Polycystic ovaries - help!

Hi all,

I went for a transvaginal ultrasound the other day, to investigate pelvic pain and the doctor found I had 'polycystic ovaries' and that I need to see my doctor in 2 weeks (next available appointment). What can I know initially about having these cysts? I'm 20 years old. TIA

Hi Tia. There's plenty of information online about polycystic ovaries. I too have them but I don't have the syndrome as I ovulate regularly and have regular periods. They say facial hair and acne can accompany PCO. In terms of fertility, how are they effecting you? If you have the syndrome then you may ovulate irregularly and be made to put on clomid or something similar to ovulate. It's not a major issue in the world of infertility.

I have PCOS and ended up having IVF to have my children (thankfully the IVF was successful). You haven't said whether you are trying to get pregnant. One way to manage PCOS is to keep your weight under control (something I've always struggled with).

I have PCOS and conceived my child naturally luckily and gave birth early 2013 - I was told at at 15yo in 2005 that I'd be unlikely to have children naturally.

PCOS can be an asshole but once you understand it, it helps you deal with it better.

Knowledge is power. Research it, look into it and it will assist you. I never did until very recently (this year) because I believe it runs in my family (my mother and grandmother also had symptoms and I believe my daughter may develop it when she's older - I want to be able to help her manage it from an early age.

What kind of info are you looking for?

Hi OP - Having cysts on your ovaries may mean you have polycystic ovaries, however it does not necessarily mean you have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In your case it sounds like this is an incidental finding, and though it may need further investigation (e.g. Bloods for hormone profile) I would try not to jump the gun at this stage if it wasn't the original point of the ultrasound. Hopefully you will get more of an idea after seeing your doctor.

cru cru I've just had my final dose of clomid fail & the consultant has mentioned that my next step would be IVF. I've just read that this is the route you took to gain your little miracle. Did they conduct any other methods prior to full blown long course IVF?

We had three rounds of IUI. It was less invasive (and much cheaper) than IVF but it didn't work.

I actually didn't find IVF awful. It had been two years of nothing happening so it felt really good to be "doing something". It helped that I got pregnant first time with IVF (there wasn't anything wrong with my eggs, the PCOS meant I wasn't releasing them).

So did you go private for all of the ivf or just some of it? Is IUI classed as IVF & one of your chances?

I went private for all my treatment (we did go to see an NHS consultant but she said I wasn't eligible for treatment until I lost 20 kg). IUI is a separate thing from IVF (from memory, it cost about £1k per round of IUI compared with £7k plus for IVF).
