Gonal F dose too high for my age?

Saw my consultant today to discuss recently failed cycle.

Nothing pointing to why it didnt work, it just didnt.

He was happy with everything else, response to drugs, eggs, fertilisation etc.... i got 9 eggs, 7 fertilised, he said 12 eggs would of been better but 9 was good.

Will be keeping me on same protocol and drug doses for second cycle.

The one thing bothering me tho is that 3 times he said the only thing that stands out is the dose of Gonal F i was on (300iu) for someone my age (i'm 32) it seemed a lot.

He said if i was nearer 40 fine but still being fairly young it just seemed high but it worked so its fine.

He then said it could be because my FSH level was high which could mean poor ovarian reserve but he didnt have my FSH levels there and then that was that!

But now its out there and he has said it i'm worried!

I'm going to ring the clinic next week to try and find out more but just wondered what other people's dose of Gonal F is or has been for their age and what their FSH has been?!

I know everyones different but i have nothing to compare it to at the moment!

Hi Hope, I was 29 when I did my ivf cycle in July. My FSH was high so they said I had low ovarian reserve. I am just looking at my treatment plan and I did 5 days on 200. Then 2 days on 275. Then 2 days on 350 and then 4 days on 400! I wasn't responding as well as they would have liked.
Although on EC day they got 10 eggs. 9 were mature and we ended up getting 5 excellent blasts!!

I would say don't worry about the doses, I just thought of how much gas your body needs to get going. Some people need less and some people more. Hope that's helpful xxxxx

Have you had your amh levels checked Hope? It doesn't sound like it from your post?

As I understand it the drug dose is usually a lot higher for low amh to try and get your ovaries to respond.

I really don't thing a "might be low" is good enough though really. You need to know either way.

Dosage of stims is irrelevant to age

It's based on AMH and then thereafter previous response

AMH is a predictive measure but the best test is your actual response to stimulation

I did two cycles on 450iu starting dose of stims aged 33

A friend aged 32 did between 450iu and 600iu

It's all about what's right for your body, not your age

And echoing PP that you should know your AMH!

I did mine in 2003 - at that time they didn't do AMH just FSH. At 38/39 my FSH was 5.5. So they put me on 150 units per day of Gonal F. I think I did 11 days of stimming. At egg collection they could only get to one ovary and collected 5 eggs. Of these only 2 fertilised. Both were transferred back at 2 days. I don't know why but I did get OHSS and was in hospital for a week. Whilst there I got a positive pregnancy test. B/G Twins born at 34+4.

Thanks everyone i feel a bit better now although i'm pretty sure i havent had my AMH done, if i have no one has told me about it so i will check that when i ring them monday!

Yep doesn't seem that high.
My Amh was 1.44 at 28 - who knows what it is now at 35! Just been through a cycle with 375 of gonal f and 150 Menopur (they mix at my clinic). I got a bfp on the mix last time and keeping fingers crossed for testing this week!

I would say it was unlikely that you hadn't had amh tested as this is a standard test prior to IVF starting. They need it to decide what amount of stims to give you. I had it tested prior to my first IVF round but was never told the result. It was only when I went back to the clinic prior to my second round (4 years later) that my previous amh results were brought up briefly in conversation. It also came up again before I started stims as the nurses thought my proposed stims dosage was too high.
