Devastated, failed IVF attempt

Absolutely gutted doesn't even cover it. After two follicles growing quite well, went for a scan today looking at retrieval on Monday to discover they've both collapsed and released early. Cycle was abandoned today.

I know there's not much anyone can say but not many people know so just needed to vent x

Didn't want to leave your thread without a reply and I'm so sorry to read your story.
Is this your first ivf attempt? What did clinic say was the next step? Can you start again?
I'm not in the same situation as I did get 2 day 3 embryos transferred but unfortunately tested negative yesterday with AF showing so I know it's completely devastating but hoping to start another cycle again asap. Really hope you get another go that has a more positive outcome xx

Thanks for reply. Yes it was first attempt, have a 5 year old conceived naturally so self funding so whether or not we attempt another cycle will depend on money. Although for me I am not bothered about the money aspect, I would lay out every penny I have, it's the devastation when it fails and you've spent 2 weeks jabbing needles in yourself and literally nothing to show for it.

I have a very low AMH and apparently it is a factor with follicles releasing early so if we did another cycle they would look at retrieving when they are slightly smaller but haven't released. Just going through the emotions and now angry they didn't do that anyway if they know early release can be a factor with low AMH.

I can completely understand your frustration and as you say jabbing yourself for two weeks then nothing to show for it.

I feel the same about money, we don't have any children and I am nearly 40 so up until my birthday (beginning of Feb ) we can have two cycles on the NHS and I think two fet. This was my first cycle and we have one Frostie so I'm really hoping to try that asap and hopefully try and fit a fresh cycle in before my birthday if the fet fails but I know really pushing it time wise but otherwise we will pay as it's all we really want. Feel it would be more emotionally draining to keep going through it rather than financially but obviously expensive too.

Did they say when you can start again? I've got my follow up appointment booked for Monday morning and really hope I can get going again as it seems that hope is getting me through at the moment. Xxx

Hi blondes, sorry you've had to go through 4, have they all failed after ET or before? Did medication/protocols get changed at any point? Have you had any FET?

I'm starting a new cycle next month (short protocol) this time but will be last funded cycle xxx

I was not successful till 4th private icsi cycle. Changed clinics after the first three. It's very hard.

5th was successful. 18w preg

Below is roughly what happened

1&2 were in uk.

1 think had 5 fertilised and had only 1 left at 3 days and put back day 3

2 higher dose of drugs and had 3 left at day 3 and clinic wouldn't blast and put all 3 back. I was just 40 and said would maximise my chances

3 was In Madrid. Much better ec and technologly and more drugs and think got 9 fertilised. One died. 8 left and 1 put back at day 5

Froze the rest tho they left 2 developing another day so day 6

4 was a 6day fet

5 was a 5 day fet

Have 3 left in storage tho won't use them unless something dreadful happens

Happy to have one baby. 43 at mo

Madrid did icsi. Uk didn't. Don't know why :(

Can I ask what made you go abroad? I'm really hoping obviously this cycle works but if not I may consider going abroad... xxx

Abroad is much cheaper and for me their technology was better then my uk clinic

ESP their freezing techniques

And TBH i work as a maternity night nanny and work for a lot of rich families. 2 famillies used madrid. One de and one own eggs (like me) and to be blunt they did their research and could afford to go anywhere in the world but they both chose there so thought if good enough for them (and obv worked as I looked after their babies) then good enough for me

Other clinics we looked at were serum in Athens and reprofit in think chez republic - from what I've read on mn Infertility both have good success rates as does ivf Barcelona

I hope this cycle works for you as well but if it doesn't then do look abroad as costs def cheaper even with flights and we flew Dec 28 and Jan 2 as didn't think about the date it would end up for ec and et when clinic shut my body down so they could control it

So sorry to hear your cycle was cancelled. My first cycle was cancelled too due to poor response. I was on Gonal-F and luveris for that cycle. On my second cycle they upped my gonal-f dose and changed me from luveris to menopur and I responded much better - got 16 eggs at retrieval. I was thrilled. The following day though they called and said that only 1 of the 16 had fertilised normally so we were left with 1 embryo. In the 6 years that we had been trying to conceive we had had a lot of bad days but that was definitely the worst! We decided to do a 3 day transfer with the 1 embryo and amazingly it worked and now i'm 19 weeks pregnant.

What i'm trying to say is that often the first cycle is trial and error so try to see it as an opportunity for the clinic to review what hasn't worked and make changes. My clinic gave me a partial refund, all except €1000 back, on my cancelled cycle. Does your clinic make any type of refund if you don't get to egg collection?

What was the Madrid clinic?

So sorry to hear about your experience. I can relate: I had 2 cancelled egg collections already due to follicle ruptured prematurely. You come to the collection they usher you into the theatre just to usher you out in a few minutes because there is nothing to collect :-( 2 times. Maybe ask your doctor what can be changed in your stimulation protocol to better control when you ovulate.
