endocrine tumours scan

Hi! I'm 26. no children before. Dr at GP diagnosed me with high level of prolactin. I have to do an check up for endocrine tumours. has anyone done this? what will happen to me??? im so scared....:'(

Hi Julia, try not to worry. I'm not an expert but I do have a prolactinoma which is a benign tumour of the pituitary gland and causes high prolactin levels. (Mine was 5000+ whereas normal is below 500, I think - not sure what the units are.) I was referred to an endocrinologist who sent me for an MRI, which found the prolactinoma as expected. They're apparentlly quite common so it's possible you have one too. It sounds a lot scarier than it is - most people respond really well to medicine which brings down the prolactin level. It's rare that it needs surgery and in principle, it shouldn't have any impact on fertility. Once your prolactin comes down to normal levels, your periods should return (if they've stopped - that's one of the common ways the high prolactin levels get diagnosed in the first place). I am on this board because I have PCOS and blocked tubes - not because of the prolactinoma. It may need medication for life (bar during pregnancy) and it's never nice knowing you have a medical condition, but try not to be scared. You'll be fine! Good luck with your appointment.
