Are we doomed? Partner BMI over 30

Hi everyone.

Me and my partner have been ttc almost 2 years with no luck, we have had all the preliminary blood tests and sperm sample is ok but low motility.
We went back to the GP yesterday to review the results and sign the referral to infertility specialist but the GP says that the specialist might not accept the referral as my partner (male) is measuring at 36 BMI. I am in the 'normal' range. GP says that he will note the referral form to say that he is 'broad framed' and healthy but he is not sure if this will have any influence.

Has anyone else been in the same position and did they accept your referral? I've searched online read that some people have been allowed onto Infertility Specialist waiting lists with high male BMI on the provision that they loose weight before treatment can start. He is healthy but broad frame and I can't imagine he would ever get to under 30.
Feeling like we've hit a wall.

For our NHs treatment we were both weighed, both had to blow into a device to check not smoking and both had to pass all checks. The NHS BMI is 30, where I live, no matter what size/frame - which is not an ideal way of measuring health but that is what they use. We were only weighed just before treatment started and if BMI too high would have had to stop and wait - so better to know need to lose weight earlier.

On a positive, a friend's dh lost 2 stone to get his BMI under 30 and just before started IUi conceived naturally. Perhaps due to improvements in his diet/exercise etc is what they suspect as his spermatozoa improved.

Thanks for your reply. He would need to lose 4 stone to be in the 'normal' range and I can't see that ever happening, he would need to lose all his muscle and totally change his body shape.
The GP even said that it's a strange requirement as male bmi hasn't been proven to have any effect on fertility.

Another friend had a BMI over 40 and was given all basic gp tests, saw the consultant and he told her she could not have treatment or be on a list until lost weight. She argued it was her height, she was healthy etc but had to lose weight. She never got her BMI down but on her weight loss journey ( went from size 20 to 16) got pregnant and has had 2 children.

Might be worth seeing if he can reduce BMI - to show good intentions.

We found Brazil nuts, good supplements and seeing a private urologist about poor spermatozoa was most helpful thing for us ( dh's BMI was under 25, but mine was 31 when I started tests).

On the criteria for our area at least, it doesn't mention male BMI, just that the female must be between 18 and 29.9. Mine is variable around 27-28 and I am trying to lose more with the hope that it will increase our chances either naturally or artificially.

ours doesnt do male bmi either newforest i wouldnt worry too much.
