Confused about cycle surge?

Last month I missed our OV surge completely because I only started testing for it about day 12 as I'm usually a 28/29 day cycle. And no surge, no sign of it. Very confused. So this month after a 28 cycle I started testing for ovulation yday (day 5 after start of period) and today on ?day 6 after period starts I'm getting a smiley surge face? How is that possible ?!?!?

I should add that I had a MC (after IVF) late March so maybe things are still a bit weird even though periods have gone back to 28 day cycle?
