IVF glass vials

I keep smashing / crushing my glass water vials when trying to snap the top off to mix up the powder. Does this happen to anyone else? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any tips?

I am in Australia so not sure if your glass vial is the same design as mine. My Pregnyl came in a glass vial that had a line around the top of the lid which is where I thought it was meant to break apart. So with my first vial, I tried to snap it at this point and it smashed. I then learned that it is supposed to snap at the thinnest point in the middle of the vial. I now hold the bottom of the vial in one hand and use my thumb to press on a black dot on the top of the vial and it snaps away cleanly. Are your vials similar to this?

Have you tried posting / looking on fertilityfriends.co.uk? Or ask your nurse?

Sorry so long ago since I did IVF but didn't want your post to go unanswered.

Good luck!

You put your thumb on the blue spot and then snap it back, away from you. There are videos on YouTube.

I asked my nurse today, and she showed me again and I thought I had it down. Thumb on the dot, not too much pressure and snap sharply towards myself. But I've tried to do it this evening and smashed it again. I think it's getting psychological now. I'm getting really pissed off at myself! It looks so easy when I see others doing it, but I keep fucking it up! Angry

I was just about to say are you on FF? I have got the plastic things for snapping this time with me, I can pop some in the post if you need some? Shellster!! How are you?? Update please. I'm on cycle # 4 as we speak

Must be so frustrating for you Tootsie. I can imagine it would be awkward having the thumb on the dot and snapping it towards myself as you describe. I always do as Maidmarigold says and snap it away from me. Perhaps you could watch a video on you tube and follow along as you do the next one?

Lauren, so lovely to keep popping into you randomly around the threads! I am not far behind you. I am on day 14 of my current cycle and start estrogen tablets on day 20 in preparation for IVF next cycle. Although I will be attempting cycle 10 rather than cycle 4! Where are things at with you? When will you know how many eggs? Do you just synch your cycles so that your uterus is at the right stage or are you taking estrogen while the eggs are cooking?

I am on FF, and I do have some of the plastic snappers, but to be honest I wasn't having any luck with those either. I'm obviously just being an idiot. I'm back at my clinic again tomorrow, so will ask again then. Perhaps it is the difference between snapping towards myself or away from myself that's the issue. Thanks!

I always snapped them away from me and didn't have any trouble. Always used the plastic cover-thingy though, because I was scared of cutting myself if they shattered. I only broke two in 3 cycles...

Tootsie it's Lilly83, I had a feeling you were on there when I saw this. Shell I hardly ever come on here all my times spent on FF, just nip on now and again. The clinic are payinf for us to have an exclusive rather than shared due to last time. I'm having scratch, glue, Prednisilone, clexane, Gestone and embryo scope this time too. When you expecting transfer? Mine should be late March/early April. I start DR on Sat next week, then 2 weeks after have a scan if all good the donor stops get pill then starts stimms on her bleed and I start on tablets for my lining. Sorry to highjack Toots not spoke to She'll for a while Smile

Glad you're back at the clinic again tomorrow Tootsi where you can hopefully get your technique down pat. Perhaps you should show the nurse your technique rather than watching her so she can see what's going wrong. I really hope snapping away from you helps. Let us know how you get on.

When you said your in the middle of a cycle Lauren, I thought you were closer to EC - but sounds like we are on similar schedule as I will be having transfer around 26th March. I am mainly on the thread Anyone starting IVF soon? Join me (2) so if you do pop back here from FF while your going through your treatment, would love to hear how you're getting on.
