How did you work out how many embryos to transfer?

Just had my egg collection today - got 7 which apparently was expected given my age (40) and my Amh levels. Should any fertilise I'm really confused as to how many to transfer. Basically, we already have a 7 year old daughter and dh doesn't want any more. He's agreed to go through this because he loves me but we both absolutely do not want twins. I also feel like I'm treading on egg shells as he suffers from depression and I'm concerned about how all this may affect him. I know our chances of success are slight anyhow, but I'm battling between doing what is probably fair (1 embryo) and what will boost our chances (2). Any advice?

If this is your first transfer I would go for one and then if it doesn't work have two put back next time. But if you absolutely cannot consider the idea of twins then don't ever put two back.

If you transfer one, the embryo could still split and result in identical twins..

I debated as to one or two but I had one perfect 5 day embryo so went for just one, I think if the embryos aren't grade A they might suggest 2 and I like to hope the doctor know best. I know though, it's an impossible choice!
I'm having egg transfer on Saturday and will decide then as it's impossible to know what the embryo quality will be until then anyway. So you have a few days to weigh up the pros and cons :)

if you def dont want twins then one

generally they offer to put back two but obv up to you

first time i had 4 eggs, all 4 fertilized, 2 died and was going to have 2 put back in.day before transplant so did another one so only had one left, put in and failed

this time, had 8 eggs collected, all fertilized but 5 took, 2 not so good and 3 good and was going to put back 2 and freeze one but as im 41 and this will be out last try (spent just under £12k) they suggested putting in all 3

dp and i were omg as only thought they would put in 2 at a time, but we both decided that if did 2 and failed we would have always wondered if 3rd would have taken iyswim

if all 3 take omfg panics but will be fine , twins would be great and even if one i would be overjoyed just to have a baby

Got a call from the embryologist today who says 5 have fertilised. Am now waiting on tomorrow's call to see what's happened in 24 hours. Odd but was kinda hoping they would say there's only 1 top quality so the choice is taken away. Oh, it's all such a headf**k!

I would ask yourself would you prefer twins or none. That's one way of working it out.

Ditto slave. That's what dp and I thought. Triplets 'gulps' or no baby. And triplets won hands down iyswim

Decision appears to have been taken out of our hands. Got a call from the embryologist yesterday saying that of the 5, one's now not working at all, one is good and the others are dividing abnormally i.e. cells growing too fast and by 3 rather than 2. Didn't expect that at all given the previous day's call. Going in today to transfer the good one. What a rollercoaster. Not holding out much hope now....

My transfer is today and I know that all you need is one egg to make a baby, lots of women only have one egg and manage a BFP :)
Please try to think positive it's make the journey a whole lot easier x

I also had only one embryo on our third cycle - two eggs harvested but one didn't make it and our two frosties perished too.

Our one embryo starts in Y2 next week .

Thanks to everyone for their comments and good luck to those in the thick of it. Had one grade 1 transferred yesterday and as two of the naughty ones are behaving better, I apparently could have had one of the meta deferred to. However, given the twin thing and the not really understanding what the impact of it behaving oddly, I opted for one. I do think that getting an update from the embryologist when you're gowned up and waiting on the operating table a tad odd. Rather intimidating and makes it difficult to make a decision at the very last minute. Apparently standard at my clinic - anyone else had that?
Anyhow, now trying to relax and not think about what a dull pain in my loser right pelvic area means!

Just thought I'd better update given all your lovely and kind messages. Unfortunately it didn't work so after all that agonising we are at the end if the road. Due to dh's depression issues plus our committed to school fees for dd we said we would only do this once. I feel absolutely gutted and sad due to the finality of it all. It may sound odd but I feel as though I'm grieving. Am sure things will get better in time but right now the days are spent running at full speed at work then collapsing in tears during the evening.
