Hycosy

I'm having a hycosy this week. Feeling pretty nervous about it, plus also anticipating bad news (regular af and ovulation, but cycle #26 of dedicated trying).
To complicate matters, I may have to attend a family member's funeral straight after.
Had colposcopy last year and didn't find it too bad but got a nasty infection afterwards. How did you get on if you had one?

Hi threepiece I had a hyfosi three weeks ago ( I think it'se basically the same). It was absolutely fine and no infection. I think the infection risk is pretty low. My tip is take a sanitary towel.... the ink comes back out afterwards!

I couldn't tell what the hell was on the screen but the doctor said the ink was slow going through the tubes due to (technical term) 'gunk'! She gave the impression everything was fine. However the next day I got a call saying they found a polyp, and with ten days I was having an op under GA to remove that. For some reason I wasn't actually expecting them find anything (doh) so it was a bit of a shovk. My advice would be to ask lots of questions and

...and be prepared that there might be something wrong!

I'm cycle #18 of dedicated trying with regular periods. I see finding the polyp as a good thing - they can prevent implantation, block fallopian tubes and cause early miscarriage. With my tubes flushed out and polyp removed I almost feel like it's a blank slate (for a few months at least!).

Hi threepiecesuite, I had a HyCoSy in May and it not too bad. It was suggested that I take 2 paracetamol + 2 ibuprofen beforehand, which I did. Still got some period pains during but staying relaxed and breathing slowly seemed to help. Everything came back clear for me and I felt fine afterwards. Like PotatoesPastaAndBread says, take a sanitary towel with you. I did, but in the end the nurse gave me one anyway. Hope it goes well.

Don't worry it's really pretty painless. If you are used to smears (or colposcopies) I don't think it's anymore invasive. Take a sanitary towel but I'm not sure you'll need it. I used one but didn't have any leaks. My test was all clear. They do say you can be extra fertile in the coming weeks/months after as it clears your tubes but that didn't work for us.

Hello three - I had a HyCoSy a couple of years ago and it was not too bad at all. I also took paracetamol / ibuprofen beforehand. Everything came back clear and the extra fertile thing - don't know whether it is a myth or not - worked for us, I fell pregnant with DS1 the first cycle after.

I hope it is goes well and that the results give you some good information to plan what to do next x

As pps have said, I didn't find it a bad experience, even whe they had to open up the cervix a bit to get the catheter in. The bit where they inject the dye feels a bit sore in an odd way, but otherwise it was fine, and it was really interesting to see my ovaries etc.

I had period-style cramps afterwards as the dye came back out, which were fine on a sofa with a hot water bottle, but just be aware it might be harder to deal with at a funeral - take more painkillers and maybe one of those heat pads with you if you're prone to period pains.

Happily we conceived second cycle after the hycosy, and I'm convinced it helped to have well flushed out cervix/tubes, so good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Funeral is next week so don't need to worry now. DP can bring me home and I can have a bit of a skive on the sofa.

Encouraging to hear it 'worked'. Hope it does for us. Trying over 2 years now. We have a dd so next step would be paid-for treatment.

Well, it went ok. Didn't hurt at all, just a bit uncomfortable in places and had moderate period pains this afternoon.
Disappointingly, the contrast dye seemed to be pooling near the ovary on one side and didn't spill out. The other side was all clear and spilled out very easily and quickly.
So just coming to terms with that now really. Not feeling terribly optimistic.
