Today I had an appointment with the consultant at the hospital, I knew it would be a waste of time as last time I attended at the age of 39 years and 8 months I was told I was too old to be referred for IVF or IUI on the NHS as I needed to have been put on the waiting list at 38yrs and 6mths. Annoyingly I first saw my doctor at 38yrs and 4mths but she didn't refer me to a specialist until a year later.
I've had an HSG, been on clomid for 6mths (with no luck), I was told I was being put on the waiting list for a pelvic ultrasound last November but when I chased it up it transpired that although it was in my notes the consultant forgot to put my name on the waiting list so I'm back at the start of the 28 week queue!!
Which brings me back to today - I saw a different consultant who informed me that because I had unexplained infertility there is nothing they can do and I will be referred again to the infertility dept in Cardiff. He also said that because I was now 40 I would only be entitled to 1 round of IVF - I was a bit surprised to hear this as last time I went I was told I couldn't have it at all on the NHS. I questioned him on this and he looked to the nurse and said "thats right isn't it - 40 to 42 means 1 IVF", the nurse didn't know. I then said - so last time I came here I could have had 3 rounds on the NHS. He didn't answer this he just commented that I didn't see him last time.
What I don't think these people get is that for someone who has unexplained infertility, who does pregnancy tests even after a period just in case, this is an emotional and stressful situation. I have no one now who I can go and see to query this as this was the specialist consultant.
My appeal is does anyone on mumsnet know the situation in Wales. I'm at the end of my tether!!

Hey there, check out this web page www.infertilitynetworkuk.com/niac_2/nhs_funding_in_wales
Seems like you would be entitled to 2 free rounds, good news :)

Sorry its taken so long to respond, had internet problems. The info was really useful, I'm waiting for my referral to the infertility clinic in Cardiff but it seems that making a formal complaint meant that I didn't have to wait another 28 weeks for my ultrasound, I go this afternoon!
Sadly today I also have belly ache so know af is imminent :-(
