My Dr put me on metformin about a year ago but refused to tell me why I was on it so I didn't take it.... what does metformin do and what is it supposed to treat?

I guess I'll call me Dr and see if he still want me on it or if he wants to do more blood work first...

Why on earth are you taking a drug without understanding why you've been prescribed it??!

Metformin is used to try to help infertility related to insulin resistance (hence why it's also used in diabetes): pcos. If I remember rightly, it's meant to stabilise insulin levels which is meant to enable ovulation. It takes time to find the right dose however and obviously doesn't always work.

Please-go see your doctor and take charge of your health.

Sorry-just reread your post and realised that you chose not to take it. Well done :) but now I'd suggest finding a doctor who tells you about your health: a doctor who 'refuses' to explain a prescription is a rubbish doctor IMHO..

What does he mean by 'off'? Do you have actual figures?

He sounds dreadful. Healthcare is a partnership: you work with your physician to find the best steps. He's treating you like a child.

Your weight may well be an issue, and is something you need to tackle, but he sounds dismissive and negative in every respect.

Go back to your OBGYN (if you trust/like them) and ask for a different referral. Or go to fertilityfriend.com and ask on the boards there (lots of Americans visit that site): people will be able to recommend someone decent. People struggling with infertility generally know all their blood/scan etc results in detail, since that is often the key to finding a solution: it's all so personal, you need to know exactly what you're dealing with - one size does not fit all. The fact that you don't know these details rings huge alarm bells for me.

You sound like you've given up. Please don't. Take back the control. Leave this doctor and find someone who treats you like an adult. You've already left it a year - that's a long time. Get this sorted.
