GP has refused to send OH for semen analysis

Bit of background .

I'm 28 (today) OH is 30 this year . Stopped using contraception in march 2011 . Officially trying for past year . We go to different GP practices.
I have a daughter aged 8 from a previous relationship . OH has a daughter aged 6 from a previous relationship.

So my GP has referred me for investigations and has told me to tell OH to go to his GP to ask for semen analysis .

OH went to his GP today and said no- because he has a previous child so obviously his sperm is ok so it must be me with the problem! ( this are his GP's exact words!!)

I am fuming- that is for one sexist and for two factually incorrect! Just because he has a 6 year old it doesn't prove there is nothing wrong with his sperm now!!

I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow to get a letter for OH's GP . I'm just really annoyed with this - we cannot get sperm analysis without a referral from his GP and I can't have further testing done until the results of the semen analysis are back!

Anyone else had problems with GP like this before?

We have a further appointment with OH's GP on Friday which I am going with him to - just let him be sexist then!!

He's being a twat.
DF has had two successful ICSI PGs and has one DC conceived naturally after 10 years of not being careful.

Just because your DH happened to produce one good sperm 7 years ago doesn't vouch for the rest of them.

I'm just hoping that if I go in with my letter from my GP then OH's GP might do something.

It feels awful at the minute though - just stuck now because we can't move forward until we have the semen analysis !

The Dr us bein an idiot, myself and my DH have a 4yr old, had been TTC for 2 yrs with no success and our Dr referred us both. Even though 4 yrs ago we'd conceived naturally

I know your not entitled to treatment on the Nhs but I thought that they still cover you for investigations .

Is this right?

Yes, they should do all the basic tests but will not give you any assisted fertility treatment due to having children already. If there is a medical issue (such as a blocked fallopian tube) they will treat it for natural conception.

The GP is wrong and also a bit thick.

We conceived DD very easily (first time!), 2 years later DH's semen analysis results were so bad they told us it was unlikely we'd get pregnant again easily! So yes a previous pregnancy is not an indicator of good fertility.

My experience is yes they will do any necessary tests, and will provide any treatment you may need to conceive except the very expensive stuff like IVF.

Is it written anywhere - NICE guidelines? Etc where I can take the proof that he should refer him ?

I think the NICE guidelines are easily googlable if you want them.

But - I think it is generally recommended that couples being tested and treated for infertility are seen together, so it might be a good idea if your OH joins your GP practice and you both go in together and get this sorted. Is this possible?

Secondly - you shouldn't need to take in guidelines. Couples experiencing infertility should get basic tests whether they have 0 children or 10. Your OH needs to see a different GP, and make a complaint about the misinformed one.

Formally complain about GP.
We were refused a referral to ivf clinic as all investigations were ok sO we had unexplained infertility. We refused to see that GP again, the other GP was appalled at the 1st ones attitude. Even if your DH's count comes back apparently normal it doesn't mean the problem is you! Get DH to change GP, as most said above, having the same one is a very good idea.

Well I got my results of day 21 bloods back today and they are all fine - asked my GP about her writing a letter to OH GP but she said she couldn't interfere with how the other practice run .

So if this other GP doesn't refer OH he is going to change to my practice and so will get referred that way . I am definitely putting a complaint in about the first GP.

Great, it's hardly an expensive or difficult test. No reason for the first GP to have been so awkward.

Here's to healthy spearmint meeting healthy eggs, real soon.

DD1 took 18 months, at your age. I had to cancel my first infertility clinc appointment due to getting my BFP. Good luck!

I think.it's highly variable. DH and I saw a GP when we were having trouble.conceiving, and I was in a lot.of pain with highly irregular periods. DH has DCs from a previous relationship. He got sent for semen analysis and I got 21 day bloods taken. And that's where it ended. No investigations for me because of DH's grown up kids. As for the pain, I was advised to take painkillers. Thank Christ 2 years later we conceived naturally.

Partner having adult children is ridiculous.

DSIL's DH had teen sons when they got together, but lovely as they were, they lived with their mum several hundred miles away.

A few days in the holidays is hardly, even disregarding genetics, motherhood, had they not conceived naturally.

Luckily my GP has already talked about sending us to the CRM ( center for reproductive medicine ) after OH sperm analysis results are back for further tests like HYCOSY ( I think that's the acronym) etc so my GP is all on board thankfully - she was really annoyed with OH's GP for causing me so much stress - she said the last thing I need to do is stress !

Getting a bit excited now thinking that I may eventually get my BFP! Fingers crossed !!

Well DH had his semen analysis two weeks ago and ........,I got my BFP yesterday!! Over the moon!!
