Implanon

Hello all,

I came on here because I would like some unbiased advice. Very stupidly I have had the same contraceptive implant (Implanon) in for 7 years. I was just to frightened to get it removed as I have a very big problem with needles. I finally did so this morning. However, I am worried what this means for my fertility both now and in the longterm. When I first asked a doctor I was told I should get it replaced because it will not be protecting me any-more (not because it could do me harm). Instead of doing what I should and having it removed and replaced I simple went on the pill assuming this would be fine. However, I came off this and my partner and I have been trying for a baby for over a year with no luck (hence me finally plucking up the courage to go to the doctors and ask some questions. It was very embarrassing and I fainted again). They said it's being there probably wasn't helping. I did ovulate this month according to the ovulation test (i.e. before the removal of the implant). Has anyone had any similar experiences?

My understanding of implanon is that it slowly releases its hormone and needs replacing after a few years as it runs out - it certainly wouldn't keep releasing hormones for 7yrs so I can't see the empty tube still being in your arm making much difference tbh.
Maybe psychologically it will make a difference if you have it removed - fwiw I found removal less painful than insertion

Thank you. You make me feel better. I had it out on Friday and if nothing else at least I am not worrying about it now. Last month I had an ovulation test. Tell me I ovulated. This was the first time in a year so you never know. Lotte
