Contest to re-name dratted Iceland volcano

I fail to see why we should tolerate disruption from a volcano whose name we can't even pronounce.

Therefore, since we can't stop it erupting, I propose we re-name it. It's not as if this is unprecedented. After all, mountains are re-named all the time. Antigua changed the name of Boggy Peak to Mount Obama, Carnedd Uchaf had its name changed last year to Carnedd Gwenllian, and China renamed a mountain in honor of Avatar.

I throw down the gauntlet with this suggestion: Ash Hole

P.S.

  1. Apologies to Iceland but you started it.

  2. Apologies if this has already been done by someone else.

  3. Apologies for lack of prize in contest.

I'd suggest Ash Pipe, since it's still generating debris that goes up, rather than being a hole that sucks it down

[ While I like the smell of some pipe tobaccos, I would not advocate them for anywhere that is intended to remain nice and clean, as some owners have a naughty habit of tapping them on the bottom of their heel to ensure the last remnants of tobacco fall out. ]

Thanks for the info about those other renamings. Had not known.

Lava Lout.

In honour of its disruptive, anti-social behaviour.

People have time on their hands when they're sat at foreign airports wondering when they'll next see their homes. And what better way to fill all that time than learning the proper pronunciation? If you make it too easy, stranded travellers will have even less to do to keep the spirits up.

Here is the BBC Pronunciation Unit's guide on how to saw the glacier's name. Eyjafjallajökull (or Eyafallajökull) is pronounced AY-uh-fyat-luh-YOE-kuutl (-uh) , that is -ay as in day, -fy as in few, -oe as in French coeur, -uu as in boot, the -tl as in atlas. The (-uh) is "a" as in ago.

Stressed syllables are in capital letters.

Well to go with the joke that was doing the rounds it should be called "Cheryl" seeing as it's no longer blowing ash.
