Am I the only one shocked at the ridiculous sentence given to the 'Moody' parents today who neglected their daughter?

I can't believe what I have just seen on the news ! The couple (surnames Moody, didn't catch their first names) who have been found guilty of neglecting their 8 year old daughter and locking her in her room, bolting the windows, painting the window so she couldnt see out etc (I don't even want to type the rest, it's so disgusting - you can google it to see)....

She was found hanged by a cord in her room after all this.... and the parents have just received 12 months imprisonment, possibly less with good behaviour.

Has this country gone completely insane?

shocking

really shocking, a very lenient sentence in the circumstances

and in teh midst of neglecting her daughter, actually, abusing her, the mother was trying to become a surrogate? her maternal duties are clearly exceptionally warped

and the stepfather just stood by and let it happen too.

and where was her biological father? he'd clearly not been involved in her upbringing

overmydeadbody · 09/04/2010 19:19

That is trully awful

They deserve to die horrible painful slow deaths and suffer like that poor girl siffered

God it breaks my heart

Our laws in this country are all wrong. Most are from a time when crimes against property/the state were considered worse then crimes against a person.
In the case of baby P, if that had been a robbery and 3 people were involved then they would get a stiffer sentence regardless of who actually broke the window to get in. If it is known that 2 or more people were being violent to the child then they should all be punished as if they delivered the final blow.
This girl was severly neglected and took her own life. Could that be why the 'parents' only got 12 months?

I agree with Soapbox any person committing such crimes agaisnt children should be sterilized.

LetThereBeRock · 09/04/2010 19:45

I didn't think she'd taken her own life. I thought she'd accidentally became entangled in the window cords, not that it makes the case any less horrifying.

I'm not so sure that the incredibly inappropriate sentence was because the child was disabled Riven, not when I read of cases like this which also received much the same sentence.

The children didn't die in that case but they also were extremely neglected and lived in utter squalor.

A shameful sentence, I cant understand how crimes involving money etc, can be more severe than those involving serious violence and neglect of the most vulnerable of society, our children. Especially with this case, as the child has learning difficulties, so is even more vulnerable.

Once again, two agencies are aware of the neglect, a school and Social services, who pay a lip service visit, and dont bother again. Then this shitty excuse of a sentence given out. What sort of message is this sending out to those who abuse and neglect their children. It like these children are just left to the mercy of whatever treatment is dished out by their abusers, as the authorities are failing to follow up, and the law is then doubly letting them down, by handing out laughable sentences. Im not social worker bashing btw as I am a social worker. Im just so angry that some other child has been let down again. And these people will be let out in a few months time, and possibly have more children. So sad.

I've only just looked on this thread again since posting it this afternoon. Thanks for posting the link to the story Agentzigzag - I kind of started this thread all in a haze of shock and anger at what I had just seen on Sky News and didn't even want to type all of the details on here as it is all so horrific (didn't think to post a link either though!).

Although I have a rubbish memory and can't name anything specifically, I know I've heard of many a sentence being a lot longer for less shocking cases than this one.

It's the 12 months that get me... think how quickly 12 months go by (or less for them if they are unfortunately lucky). What a disgrace... this is certainly no justice for that poor little girl at all. Truly horrific.

Really glad to have found this thread because this story is so utterly vile and upsetting I didn't quite know how to process the information. I just don't think I can bear to read another yet another story about child neglect and I totally agree that a 12 month sentence comes nowhere near to fitting the crime.
What happens to people like this when they get out of prison after serving such a derisory sentence?! Do they just go back to their old lives and carry on? Have other kids?
Honestly - I can't get the image of that poor little girl out of my head, just dreadful.

SlartyBartFast · 10/04/2010 23:27

that is awful,
when the school raised concerns the
so called parents transferred her to another school
where were the authorities?
school health?
child protection?

Sidge · 10/04/2010 23:37

This case actually made me cry

As a mother of a child with SN I just feel so deeply sad that such an extremely vulnerable child could be treated so appallingly.

And sadly I know how common this sort of maltreatment is, maybe not to such a degree but you wouldn't believe the numbers of children living in extreme squalor. It breaks your heart.

Nemain · 10/04/2010 23:46

I am utterly disgusted by this. There are no other words.

That poor, poor girl and others like her that have suffered/are suffering.

I hate our so-called legal system at times

presario · 12/04/2010 21:23

omg I am so glad you started this thread, I watched this on the news amidst the usual chaos of having 4 kids running riot, and I honestly thought I has misheard the sentence and the severity of the case, crazy crazy crazy what is our country coming to, no justice has been done for that poor child

ShadeofViolet · 13/04/2010 09:44

Such a terrible story, it breaks my heart
