This is getting a bit too close for comfort now.

Police have just carried out 2 controlled explosions on a bomb found in Luton train station car park - Police believe it to be related to last Thursdays events.

I thought controlled explosions are when they blow-up something which is suspect - rather than risking investigating it?

Do you remember the big IRA campaigns in the W End? One night there were successive controlled explosions in Tottenham Ct Rd and Oxford St - blowing up lost rucksacs etc.

I don't understand why it is apparantly safer to cause an explosion.

edam · 13/07/2005 04:06

Hey Blu glad I'm not the only person awake at this hour - so wound up by dh's narrow escape can't sleep. Just keep thinking - and the thought that's really getting at me now is that the bombers were delayed getting into London. So many people have lived who would have been killed had the bomb gone off at 8.30 and so many of those poor, poor people who died would have been alive had it happened to the bombers' schedule....

AFAIK controlled explosion is just that - controlled. Safer than letting something potentially detonate. They clear the public etc. etc. Sorry, that's obvious, head not working properly. But I have seen army bomb disposal experts at work in Bosnia (post-war) and they are very, very, very careful.

I know that a lot of people have been killed and hurt, and I feel so bad and upset for those who have died and have been injured, and also for the families who are waiting to hear that their loved ones have been found.
I can't help thinking though, that it could have been so much worse, with a much higher death toll, and don't think this is the end of it, its such a sad world today, such awful things happening.

Springchicken · 13/07/2005 08:23

I feel sick

When i posted this last night i didn't know that one of the bombers was actually from Luton, i just thought they had found the car there - didn't realise it was so related.

It is so horrible to think that i may have walked past this person in the street, smiled at them or even been to school/college with them.
I hope the bastard gets names soon!

so awful, can't believe people born and bred in Britain have enough hatred of this country to blow innocent people to smithereens. am sure this is just the beginning as well....hope our sale goes through and we can get the hell out of London

edam · 13/07/2005 08:49

See this Springchicken - looks as if the person who parked at Luton doesn't necessarily come from the town itself (although presumably somewhere nearby, otherwise why would they meet up there?).

BBC

Would you use Midland Mainline to get from Leeds to Luton?

Springchicken · 13/07/2005 09:57

That's right Edam - it would be the Midland Mainline.
They believe the man who left his car at Luton may still be alive as they have not found any further possesions or means to indentify him.

i too am a lutonian spring chicken..and very shocked that this could happen on my doorstep so to speak.my sense of shock and disbelief has grown since last thursday at the evil people will doto one another over 'religion' and beliefs.
my dds classmate has an auntie missing ,they are asian their aunt italian.dds friends mum was telling me this afternoon that since the attacks last thursday peoples behaviour towards her has changed, this is particularly scary for her as shes a single parent.also other asian mums at dds school have said the same thing.
in luton we have a large asian community ,the majority of asians are 100% shcked and appalled at what has happened.sadly there are a small minority who want to cause as much horror as possible.its just so sad the good are being treated badly because of the bad.
some mp in the daily mirror today said asian communities should investigate and turn the evil ones in ,its a good idea in my opinion.

sadly for my friends family theyre still waiting and praying for news ,she was saying how they cant search the hospitals and its hard getting information ,but theyre not giving up hope.

they are doing what we all should be doing ...staying positive and keep hoping.....that eventually one day these horrors will stop and no one else will suffer.
